An experiment.

October 31, 2011 - Programming

Testing out ads. Trying to make this site something that doesn’t need to be supported/hosted/paid for out of pocket.

Feel like a total douche, but for the moment it’s just an experiment.

What worries me is that they seem… well, a bit aggressive. I hope I don’t scare people away; not because they would equal more hits=more revenue, but because I like to try to deliver good content and with ads like this it’s hard to determine whether it is my content that drives people away or the advertisements.

Again though- just an experiment. I’ll see what the webstats say in a week or so, and whether it’s worth it. my experience with advertisements says no, but we’ll see, that’s what the experiment is for. Speaking of webstats, I don’t trust them. It says I’m getting 1K hits a day, but I doubt I break a couple dozen.

Have something to say about this post? Comment!

Have you considered just hosting the site yourself?

BC_Programming

I already have a LAMP server running on my laptop, and a subdomain of bc-programming is redirected to it, but my home connection has nowhere near the upload speed needed (cable). And, more importantly, it would break the TOS of my ISP. Even in the ideal case, that would just change the cost from a monetary one to one of time- which I would have to take to manage the server as well as the site itself; and I’d have to keep the laptop(or whatever machine I end up using) on all the time, and maintain a connection. my internet cuts out for about an hour intermittently every few weeks, and just the other day there was a 4 hour long power outage. the server only costs 2.99 a month and I’ve got a good few months already paid for, and they have to deal with that type of stuff. (power outages and the like). I’d just much rather it “paid for itself” so to speak.
