[19:52]<@BC_Programming> I bought a new graphics card wee GTX 1080
[19:52]<@BC_Programming> 1070 rather
[21:52]<+camerongray> ooh, nice!
[21:52]<+camerongray> I feel like I should be upgrading my PC at some point but it's still running fine :P
[21:52]<+camerongray> Running fine in a "still powerful by modern standards" way, not a "I'm a stuck up old fart and my Pentium 4 running XP still runs fine" way :P
[21:55]<@BC_Programming> Yeah it wasn't completely planned except that I'd been thinking about replacing my 770
[21:56]<@BC_Programming> only downside is the exchange rate
[21:56]<@BC_Programming> try to read up on prices "oh only $450" then realize I'm on amazon.com and not .ca and the real price is around 800
[21:59]<+camerongray> yeah
[21:59]<+camerongray> I'm still on a 770
[21:59]<+camerongray> Although I don't game so don't really need more
[22:01]<@BC_Programming> truly most of the games I play won't benefit, It was almost entirely for Just Cause 3 which has dissappointing performance
[22:02]<@BC_Programming> I also picked up a Tandy 102 portable from eBay, got it connected via RS-232 and copied some basic programs over for kicks
[22:03]<@BC_Programming> Thankfully didn't give in to the 5150
[22:03]<+camerongray> Oh wow, nice!
[22:04]<@BC_Programming> also saw another listing for a 5150 which was a 286, so that seems more AT Class
[22:04]<+camerongray> Don't really get Tandy stuff over here
[22:04]<@BC_Programming> It might have been under a different name? dunno
[22:04]<+camerongray> Nah, just not really popular
[22:04]<+camerongray> We had Acorn though which is pretty cool - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acorn_Computers
[22:05]<+camerongray> Think they were the opposite, never really made it to other countries
[22:05]<+camerongray> It was them that developed ARM CPUs
[22:05]<@BC_Programming> yeah stuff like the ZX Spectrum weren't popular over hear, likely because the import fees had to be tacked onto the price so they were less competitive than domestic stuff
[22:05]<@BC_Programming> over here*
[22:06]<@BC_Programming> the BBC Micro as I understand had proper structured BASIC didn't it? much better than the Street BASICs on other systems
[22:07]<+camerongray> yeah
[22:07]<+camerongray> I have one although the PSU blew up
[22:08]<+camerongray> Easy to fix, just a couple of caps
[22:08]<+camerongray> Well, it still works but should probably fix it before I run it. Very common problem
[22:09]<+camerongray> It's strange when you first have one blow up on you - Really loud hissing noise and tonnes of grey smoke comes pouring from the machine yet it keeps running along as if nothing is happening :P
[22:09]<@BC_Programming> heh
[22:09]<@BC_Programming> I sizzled my old 286 though I have no idea what happened
[22:09]<@BC_Programming> I flipped a jumper on the motherboard and a resistor started smoking
[22:10]<@BC_Programming> but when I put it back and turned it on it was fine
[22:10]<@BC_Programming> no idea what the jumper could possibly have been for
[22:11]<+camerongray> haha
[22:11]<+camerongray> My XT had a shorting cap that was stopping it running, took it off and it runs fine
[22:11]<@BC_Programming> iirc it was near the P8 connectors so presumably did something related to power
[22:12] * jacky (the_kink@mib-66955F8F.slsbmd.east.verizon.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 180 seconds)
[22:12]<@BC_Programming> I didn't have manuals or Internet so it was all experiments to find out what the jumpers did
[22:13]<@BC_Programming> The first tech thing I did was swap the 3-1/2 A: drive with the 5-1/4" B: drive so I could boot from the 5-1/4" boot diskettes I had, thrilled when that actually worked
[22:39]<+camerongray> haha, nice
[22:40]<+camerongray> First ever tech thing I did was remove an ISA SCSI card - Got the PC from my Dad's friend who later realised he'd left his good SCSI card in it
