[21:45]<@jacky> sorry
[21:45]<@jacky> computer problems
[21:45]<@jacky> real quick.. before it locks up again... could three long beeps be bad memory?
[21:46]<@BC_Programming> Could be, BIOS beep codes depend on the manufacturer
[21:48]<@jacky> trying to get link for mb now
[21:48]<@jacky> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128435
[21:52]<@jacky> BIOS Version/Date Award Software International, Inc. FF, 11/24/2010 <<< from system information (Win7)
[21:52]<@jacky> SMBIOS Version 2.4
[21:52]<@BC_Programming> hmm gigabyte doesn't list 3 long beeps, memory issue is 1 long and 2 short beeps though
[21:52]<@jacky> BC_Programming: ug
[21:52]<@BC_Programming> also memory issues for 3 short beeps, 4 short beeps, and 10 short beeps
[21:52]<@jacky> I have some old ram taht I think will fit, and am hoping that I can swap it in and fix it.....
[21:55]<@jacky> rats... I'm not finding 3 long beeps anywwhere, yet
[21:55]<@jacky> are you?
[21:57]<@jacky> http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/the-complete-bios-beep-guide.95391/ <<< 3 long is mentioned here... as keyboard something or other.. but I don't see that it is specific to Award bios
[21:58]<Quantos> Merry Christmas guys
[21:59]<+camerongray> Same to you :)
[21:59]<+camerongray> Did anyone do anything nice?
[22:02]<@jacky> BC_Programming: saw something about keyboard in some of the stuff I'm googling and skimming real quick
[22:02]<@jacky> I have had trouble with this kb once. stuck key, from slightly spilled tea
[22:02]<@jacky> flippped it and banged it and that seemed to "fix" it
[22:02]<@jacky> that was ages ago though
[22:02]<@jacky> I suppose the only test for that is to find another keyboard and swap 'em, right?
[22:03]<@jacky> I can't find my MemTest bootable CD... dammit... I suppose that is worth running again, isn't it?
[22:03]<@jacky> (I can eventually find somebody to d/l it and burn it for me)
[22:04]<@jacky> Is there something to run to see if the hard drive is ok?
[22:09]<@BC_Programming> Hard drive wouldn't cause BIOS beeps during startup, just a failed boot, I would expect
[22:09]<@jacky> it has failed to boot
[22:09]<@jacky> but not every time
[22:10]<@jacky> what happens is most often... just like right now
[22:10]<@jacky> I can be usingit, and it locks
[22:10]<@jacky> once... only once, so far... it showed BSOD... something about page fault, which is what got me to thinking it is memory
[22:11]<@jacky> the beeping started - once or twice - right then. Before I even held down the power button long enough to get it to switch off.
[22:12]<+camerongray> jacky: Got a new Radio thing for Christmas: https://greatscottgadgets.com/hackrf/
[22:12]<@BC_Programming> Only beeps I'm aware of while the power is on would be from overheating, though I don't think that is entirely consistent with the other symptoms
[22:12]<+camerongray> SDR like I had before but way more powerful
[22:13]<@jacky> camerongray: " ... HackRF One is test equipment for RF systems. It has not been tested for compliance with regulations governing transmission of radio signals. You are responsible for using your HackRF One legally. ... "
[22:13]<@jacky> :)
[22:13]<+camerongray> haha
[22:13]<+camerongray> Can sample 20MHz of spectrum all at once all the way from a few kHz up to 6GHz
[22:14]<@jacky> BC_Programming: I have speedfan and one other... neither showed me anything abnormal regarding heat... for what that is worth
[22:14]<@jacky> camerongray: only skimmed it quick, as I've got this othe rproblem on my mind, with this computer.
[22:14]<@jacky> what is the power out?
[22:15]<@jacky> and, can you modulate the output somehow?
[22:17]<+camerongray> Not sure, says it depends on the frequency
[22:17]<+camerongray> But yeah, you can basically modulate it any way you want - All that is done in software
[22:18]<@jacky> for example then... you'd plug a microphone into your computer's audio card, and go from there?
[22:18]<+camerongray> Could do yeah
[22:19]<@jacky> found it: 10 dBm max... which I don't understand. I understand watts. hehehehe
[22:19]<+camerongray> Won't be much, it's USB powered
[22:19]<+camerongray> Although the other use of things like this is receiving digital things and decoding them then reverse engineering the protocol
[22:19]<+camerongray> RF Remote controls for example
[22:20]<@jacky> 10dBm is 0.001 watts
[22:20]<@jacky> ehehehe
[22:20]<+camerongray> haha
[22:20]<+camerongray> Yeah, it's low powered stuff
[22:20]<@jacky> uh.. I consider 1 to 10 watts "low powered"
[22:20]<@jacky> heheeheh
[22:21]<+camerongray> lol!
[22:21]<@jacky> my old 1200 watt amp is more than "exciter" power (100w)
[22:21]<@jacky> but is not the max of 2KW
[22:21]<@jacky> hehehe
[22:21]<@jacky> but... no matter
[22:22]<@jacky> have you got it up and running and receiving?
[22:22]<+camerongray> Yeha
[22:23]<@BC_Programming> With your fancy gadgets
[22:23]<@jacky> and decoding them then reverse engineering the protocol << lost me a bit, here
[22:23]<@jacky> "my" fancy gadgets?
[22:23]<@jacky> meaning.... ?
[22:23]<@BC_Programming> camerongray :P
[22:23]<+camerongray> You get things like remote controls and stuff that send digital data
[22:23]<+camerongray> Since it is capturing to a computer you can write software to decode the data they are sending
[22:23]<@jacky> ah..like for drones (model airplanes)
[22:23]<@BC_Programming> I just got clothes which was actually great
[22:24]<@jacky> BC_Programming: any further thoughts, things to consider, things to look into? before this thing craps out and takes me off of here?
[22:24]<@jacky> BC_Programming: is most likely bet that it is ram?
[22:25]<@BC_Programming> Well I wouldn't bet on anything but it's as good a place to start as any, given the symptoms
[22:25]<+camerongray> Yeah, Drones work
[22:25]<@BC_Programming> certainly the easiest to confirm/eliminate with a memtest
[22:25]<@jacky> BC_Programming: ok. tnx. and... you just answered next question
[22:25]<@jacky> rum memtest?
[22:25]<@jacky> a while
[22:25]<@jacky> right?
[22:25]<+camerongray> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmwEqlOGV94 - This is one of the guys in the Edinburgh Hacklab controlling a Drone with it - He's very involved with the HackRF community
[22:26]<+camerongray> I was just looking for YouTube videos about the HackRF and thought "Hey, I recognise that room"
[22:26]<@jacky> camerongray: just a thought.. could you use that thing as a scanner? to set lower freq limit, and upper freq limit, and scan continously in that range?
[22:26]<@BC_Programming> yep, see what happens, any errors mean a problem, sadly at that point it's still not certain it's actually RAM unless you are able to swap in the sticks and the errors go away (you mentioned having another stick to try)
[22:26]<@jacky> BC_Programming: ok
[22:27]<@jacky> BC_Programming: and the possibility of it being the keyboard? very slim?
[22:27]<@jacky> (as the keyboard could cause the seeming randomness of when it occurs... as it could be caused by me typing? )
[22:28]<@BC_Programming> Yes I doubt it could be the keyboard- but if you have a backup to try swapping out and see if the problem goes away that could be worth a go, I've been known to be wrong before
[22:29]<@jacky> I don't thinkI have another usb keyboard laying around... but I might be able to find somebody with one
[22:29]<@jacky> ok
[22:29]<@jacky> BC_Programming: Thanks
[22:29]<@jacky> BC_Programming: wish me luck with it, over the next few days
[22:29]<@jacky> :)
[22:29]<@jacky> camerongray: you still here?
[22:30]<+camerongray> Yeah
[22:30]<@jacky>
[22:30]<@jacky> <@jacky> camerongray: just a thought.. could you use that thing as a scanner? to set lower freq limit, and upper freq limit, and scan continously in that range?
[22:30]<@jacky>
[22:30]<+camerongray> Ahh, yeah, you definitely could
[22:30]<+camerongray> Of if they are within a 20MHz range you could just view them all at once
[22:31]<@jacky> and, since it is software driven, could the user then cook up something such that it kept "number of hits" and say.. a day later... one could have a look at it, and find out what freqs are most active in that range?
[22:31]<@jacky> if so, that would be real neat
[22:31]<+camerongray> Yep, easily
[22:31]<@jacky> can it demodulate FM
[22:31]<@jacky> so that you can actually listen to the transmissions?
[22:31]<@jacky> as in police, fire, ham, business band, etc., etc. ?
[22:32]<+camerongray> Yeah, all done in software
[22:32]<@jacky> how about SSB?
[22:32]<+camerongray> Yep :P
[22:32]<@jacky> very nice
[22:33]<@jacky> you can have a lot of fun with that thing
[22:33]<@jacky> what do you intend to do? anything in particular?
[22:36]<+camerongray> Just play around really :P
[22:38]<+camerongray> http://imgur.com/1ZeMB14 - That's what the software looks like
[22:38]<+camerongray> That's it showing a ~8Mhz slice of the FM broadcast band
[22:39]<+camerongray> The hardware can do up to 20Mhz but I'm running it in a VM and VirtualBox's USB passthrough is too crap to transfer that much data so I have to turn it down a bit
[22:40]<+camerongray> It's just reallly cool how you can actually see the signals
[22:40]<@jacky> how you can actually see the signals <<< we used to call it a "spectrum analyzer" and nobody could afford one....
[22:40]<@jacky> hehehe
[22:40]<+camerongray> yeah
[22:41]<+camerongray> Then if you look at the middle box at the bottom "FM MPX Spectrum" - You can actually see how the broadcast FM is encoded
[22:41]<+camerongray> To the left of 19k is the mono channel, 19k is a pilot tone saying that stereo is supprted, to the right of that is the stereo signal and to the right of that around 57k you can just about make out 2 peaks which is the RDS data
[22:42]<@jacky> I wouldn't call it "encoded", but ok
[22:42]<@jacky> what is RDS ?
[22:42]<+camerongray> Radio Data System - The thing that sends stuff like the station name and currently playing track
[22:42]<+camerongray> May be called something different in the US
[22:43]<@jacky> ok.. that's digital stuff, right?
[22:43]<+camerongray> Yeah
[22:43]<@jacky> Id idn't think about commercial FM stations including some digital stuff
[22:43]<@jacky> this IS a commercial FM station, right?
[22:43]<+camerongray> Yeah
[22:43]<+camerongray> It's why car radios and stuff can display the station name
[22:44]<@BC_Programming> I don't think that is a thing over here
[22:44]<@jacky> BC_Programming: oh?
[22:44]<+camerongray> Ahh, we have fancy radios then :P
[22:44]<@jacky> camerongray: some car radios here can display the name of the song playing, etc.
[22:44]<@BC_Programming> Could be wrong or simply not having some fancy new radio that supports it
[22:44]<+camerongray> Ahh yeah, that's RDS
[22:45]<@jacky> camerongray: perhaps that sort of digital stuff just plain gets frozen, up there where BC lives
[22:45]<@jacky> y'think?
[22:45]<+camerongray> haha
[22:45]<@jacky> (psstt... the polar bears ate it!)
[22:45]<@BC_Programming> I never listen to the radio and the stuff I've used to do so tends to be older stuff which unsurprisingly wouldn't allow for such fancy-pants features
[22:45]<+camerongray> It also does stuff like traffic reports where a station can announce that it's about to broadcast traffic information - Car radios can then be enabled so they will stop whatever they are playing (e.g. CD or other station) and will then jump to the one broadcasting the traffic
[22:46]<@BC_Programming> fancy-pants features like, erm, FM radio, for one
[22:46]<@jacky> BC_Programming: Fancy ... like solid state ?
[22:46]<@jacky> <g>
[22:46]<@jacky> don't you hate it, when you have to wait for the tubes to warm up?
[22:46]<@BC_Programming> Ugh, the worst
[22:47]<@jacky> BC_Programming: at the risk of jinxing myself... I'm still here. not locked up, yet
[22:47]<@jacky> does that jive with a mem problem?
[22:48]<@BC_Programming> doesn't rule it out
[22:49]<@jacky> in other words, could happen quickly ... could run a long time
[22:50]<@BC_Programming> yep, just like me when I'm drunk
[22:51]<@jacky> too much info
[22:51]<@jacky> heh
[23:01]<@jacky> BC_Programming: do you have "winter" there now? today, here... I think set records. Must have been in the low 70's
[23:01]<@jacky> right now.. still into the mid 60's, and it has been dark for an hour
[23:03]<@BC_Programming> !w Nanaimo BC
[23:03]<@BC_Programming> bah
[23:03]<@jacky> I forgot that
[23:03]<@jacky> !w 21842
[23:03]<@jacky> broken then
[23:03]<+camerongray> Here we go - Some other stuff it can receive: http://imgur.com/a/LSEvB
[23:04]<+camerongray> From top to bottom - LTE/GSM (Cell phone), DAB Digital Radio, Freeview (Digital TV)
[23:04]<@BC_Programming> 4 (c) or 39.2(f) right now
[23:04]<@BC_Programming> but still sunny
[23:05]<@jacky> BC_Programming: is 39.2F typical? (I'm guessing it is)
[23:05]<@jacky> BC_Programming : TV here just said it was a record setter... 74F today
[23:06]<@BC_Programming> yeah that temp isn't really noteworthy here this time of year, pretty typical
[23:06]<@jacky> camerongray: ok. I can see that it is showing me that something is there, but I don't know how to interpret what I'm seeing. :)
[23:06]<@jacky> BC_Programming: we've had a LOT of rain though.
[23:07]<@BC_Programming> possibly a bit warmer, I'd expect freezing temps December/January
[23:07]<@jacky> I fear that when winter temps get here, we will be hit hard. just how things seem to go....
[23:10]<@jacky>
[23:10]<@jacky> be back later, (I hope) :)
[23:11]<@jacky>
[23:11]<@jacky> to all: I enjoyed the chat
[23:11]<@jacky> Thanks
[23:11]<@jacky>
[23:13]<+camerongray> np, cya!
