[00:00]<+camerongray> I just don't get why Nathan just doesn't shut it down if he doesn't want to have anything to do with it
[00:00]<+camerongray> He's just setting himself up for being sued when someone follows someone's stupid advice in the channel
[00:00]<@BC_Programming> same reason he refuses to give mods the ability to ban on the forum, paired with an inability to actually choose people who would make good mods
[00:01]<@BC_Programming> "oh, you're 16, just joined a month ago, and have been begging to be a mod? yeah sounds like a good idea"
[00:01]<+camerongray> The classic recently was when Patio replied to a spam post asking them to remove the links from their post
[00:02]<jamer> "Know nothing at PC's but says I'm a hacker yeah, we will make you an admin"
[00:02]<+camerongray> I'm now just being a pain by reporting every spam post I see
[00:02]<+camerongray> Nathan won't even bother to reply to my PMs now
[00:02]<@BC_Programming> haha really? who said that about reporting spam?
[00:03]<+camerongray> Oh, noone said it's a pain
[00:03]<Veltas> Huh looks like Windows.old has a very significant use in the Windows 10 update
[00:03]<+camerongray> But I'm basically having to do their job as they never seem to find even obvious stuff
[00:04]<jamer> Veltas its in case you want to go back to your former windows within the 30 days
[00:04]<Veltas> Yeah
[00:04]<Veltas> Previously Windows.old had a completely different use
[00:05]<Veltas> I mean I think that's really stupid that it has the same name, it should have a different name. Might have saved some confusion earlier as well.
[00:05]<Veltas> It's not really anything to do with the old Windows.old
[00:07]<jamer> No it doesn't.. I've seriously called windows 10 a bastard child of windows 7 and 8
[00:08]<Veltas> I'm sure most of Windows 10 is solid, it's just these random things that ruin it
[00:08]<Veltas> Or that would ruin it
[00:08]<+camerongray> Yeah, I like it but it just feels a bit rough around the edges at times
[00:08]<+camerongray> Although admittedly I don't use it that much
[00:09]<Veltas> All Windows releases are kind of rough around the edges
[00:09]<@BC_Programming> Microsoft seems to assume that because I'm an MVP I love Windows 10
[00:09]<+camerongray> I use Linux on my main machines and Windows 7 at work so the only times I use 10 are in a VM on my laptop for working away from the office and on HTPCs
[00:09]<jamer> There's alot that has been smoothed out from 7-8 but there's still some clunkiness
[00:10]<Veltas> camerongray: I have Windows 8.1 installed on my computer and I spend 90% of my time in a VirtualBox instance of Debian
[00:10]<+camerongray> If I had to describe Windows 10, it almost feels like using Linux, in the sense that tiny UI things don't always work properly or feel exactly right
[00:10]<Veltas> There is a special place in hell for people like me
[00:10]<@BC_Programming> Aside from a few features many things are worse in Windows 10
[00:10]<+camerongray> Yeah, why on earth do you not have Debian as your base OS? :P
[00:10]<@BC_Programming> Connecting to a VPN is just ridiculous
[00:10]<Veltas> camerongray: Over summer I played a lot of Planetside 2.
[00:11]<+camerongray> I still need to get my desktop moved over to Debian from Arch
[00:11]<@BC_Programming> I should put mirc on my laptop
[00:11]<+camerongray> Laptop is already moved so I'm currently using two different distros at the same time
[00:11]<Veltas> I'm considering installing Debian over my computer now that uni has come around again, since I can't play PS2 properly except at stupid hours of the night
[00:11]<Veltas> BC_Programming: I recommend Quassel client if you haven't used it
[00:11]<+camerongray> Oh yeah, I also have a Windows SSD in my desktop for games although I rarely use it
[00:12]<+camerongray> Veltas: What WM do you use? Anything interesting?
[00:12]<Veltas> KDE
[00:12]<+camerongray> Ahh cool
[00:12]<jamer> Ironically I have at least 10 different windows 10 keys from my dreamspark
[00:12]<Veltas> I might use awesome again... depends how bothered I am
[00:12]<+camerongray> I used to always use KDE
[00:12]<+camerongray> Ahh yeah, I use i3 now
[00:13]<Veltas> awesome is basically the same deal as i3
[00:13]<@BC_Programming> hmm only two of the three customer sites that I setup to send database integrity reports sent one this morning. Guess I know what I'm doing tomorrow morning lol
[00:13]<jamer> I also get VMware for free also
[00:13]<+camerongray> yeah
[00:13]<Veltas> i3 is a bit 'nicer' but awesome is what I'm used to
[00:13]<+camerongray> Ahh yeah, true
[00:13]<Veltas> I also kind of prefer that the key commands won't hurt my head after using vim commands so much
[00:13]<+camerongray> Loads of people at uni use XMonad but I can't be arsed with re-learning haskell to configure it
[00:14]<Veltas> Weird, I know very few people prepared to use XMonad
[00:14]<@BC_Programming> I must have learned something about Haskell at some point since I did that anagrams thing, but must have forgotten instantly since it's gibberish to me now
[00:14]<Veltas> I don't know Haskell... I have "learn you a haskell" around somewhere.
[00:14]<+camerongray> Edinburgh teaches Haskell in first year so it's quite common for us
[00:15]<Veltas> I'm not sure if I'll ever bother learning it, it sounds like the kind of language I'd never want to learn
[00:15]<@BC_Programming> Buying books is one of my other problems :P
[00:15]<Veltas> Yeah I buy too many books
[00:15]<+camerongray> Haskell is really interesting, but I have never found a use for it
[00:15]<jamer> If one of you want my Linux VMware key I'll gladly give it to you
[00:15]<+camerongray> I never buy books :P
[00:16]<+camerongray> Way too overpriced and never really need them
[00:16]<Veltas> Well I usually get secondhand
[00:16]<+camerongray> I have a few where they were really required but most of the time I don't bother
[00:16]<Veltas> I find it easier to read printed text
[00:16]<@BC_Programming> Programming F# 3.0, Programming C# 5.0, Code Complete, Clean Code, The Art of Computer Programming 4 volume set
[00:16]<Veltas> Might be related to dyslexia
[00:16]<jamer> Might havlagged ouy
[00:16]<Veltas> I got "The Old New Thing" by Raymond Chen recently
[00:16]<@BC_Programming> Barely touched any of them, shame because I would have loved to have them years ago, if my dog-eared VB2 programming guide is any indication
[00:17]<Veltas> It's basically just his blog ported into a book
[00:17]<Veltas> But it's a very nice book nonetheless
[00:18]<Veltas> The only Windows thing I care about anymore is that blog
[00:18]<jamer> I have 300 dollars in school books that I've only opened up 7 times
[00:20]<Veltas> Ah my favourite purchase recently is "The Linux Programming Interface"
[00:20]<Veltas> It's an excellent book, it is basically just the Linux API written out and explained in a large amount of detail in one massive book
[00:21] * Guest56852 (BC_Program@mib-50A38668.no.shawcable.net) has joined #glitchpc

[00:21] * ChanServ sets mode: +a
[00:21] * ChanServ sets mode: +o BC_Programming
[00:22]<@BC_Programming> oh huh I forgot about my random quit message script, neat
[00:22]<Veltas> noice
[00:22]<Veltas> camerongray: How do you keep IRC going? Do you just quit, or do you have a bouncer? Or do you have a client running remotely?
[00:23]<Veltas> camerongray has quite possibly gone to sleep given it is past 1am here
[00:26]<+camerongray> I use quassel
[00:26]<+camerongray> It's a bit crap but does the job
[00:26]<Veltas> Quassel is quite nice, I should set that up some time
[00:26]<Veltas> Apparantly managing accounts on the core is bad or something
[00:27]<Veltas> I thought the client was decent
[00:27]<Veltas> I used it for a brief period on another host
[00:27]<Veltas> Currently I run irssi inside screen
[00:27]<Veltas> Irssi inside screen is a really stupid solution
[00:28]<+camerongray> KitB on #CompSoc-uk is working on a replacement for quasssl
[00:28]<Veltas> Interesting
[00:28]<Veltas> How likely is that to actually happen?
[00:28]<Veltas> Given basically every significant project I've seen by CS students in real life has been abandoned
[00:29]<Veltas> Er that's not a slur on CS students, I mean students in general
[00:30]<+camerongray> He's got something almost working
[00:30]<+camerongray> And there's decent demand for it around our channels
[00:31]<@BC_Programming> It was interesting to get some actual conversation here for once, huh
[00:35]<Veltas> camerongray: What exactly is the problem with Quassel, then?
[00:35]<jamer> it was nice
[00:36]<Veltas> I haven't personally experienced functional problems with Quassel, but I didn't use it for very long
[00:41]<+camerongray> It works fine but the protocol is horrible
[00:44]<Veltas> Hmm protocol looks horrific
[00:44]<jamer> Anyone here play space engineers?
[00:44]<Veltas> I have heard of it
[00:46]<jamer> It's actually a pretty good dynamics wose
[00:53]<jamer> They added in ai and pirates...
[00:53]<@BC_Programming> I have that game in steam
[00:53]<@BC_Programming> only played 2 hours
[00:54]<jamer> Next thing is planets which is probably this week .. They stopped updates on the source code a few weeks go
[00:57]<Veltas> I played The Beginner's Guide
[00:58]<Veltas> I thought it was quite good, bit it is arte so I don't know what everyone would make of it
[00:58]<jamer> Multiplayer is going to get a complete overhaul .. The one they have currently works but it not as smooth as it should be
[02:05]<+Craig_remote> Boo
[02:05] * Craig_remote is now known as Craig
[02:05]<+Craig> Eh! I remembered, :P YAY
[02:06]<@BC_Programming> can't tell if you are booing the notes about star citizen or imitating a ghost
[02:06]<+Craig> How goes it BC_Programming, camerongray, and everyone else.
[02:06]<+Craig> Imitating a ghost.
[02:06]<+Craig> :p
[02:06]<@BC_Programming> spooky
[02:06]<+Craig> https://www.facebook.com/brokedcomputerinc/posts/847333605374259
[02:06]<+Craig> What do you think?
[02:07]<@BC_Programming> not bad
[02:08]<+Craig> I like that having 6 Spindle heads can read at the same speed as an SSD, and do up to 3 different transfers to 3 different devices at around 100 Meg, depending on the load and size of files.

[17:56]<jamer> I found a 1998 Subaru legacy gt for sale and I'm actually interested in it
[17:59]<@BC_Programming> My mom bought a 1970 Mercedes last year. Well I guess technically I bought it because I lent her the money for it. I'm not a car guy and I said "it's a piece of shit, you will regret this" and she just said "But it's a Mercedes"
[18:00]<@BC_Programming> I'll give you a guess who ended up right
