[18:03]<jamer> Hey calum is in!
[18:03]<@Calum> hey jamer
[18:04]<@BC_Programming> hey Calum
[18:04]<@Calum> hey BC_Programming
[18:04]<@BC_Programming> whew glad we got that out of the way
[18:04]<jamer> So I found a lock to replace my servers lock
[18:05]<jamer> Before pc says something about they key .. I've got the key for the new lock
[18:06]<jamer> BC* damn autocorrect
[18:06]<@BC_Programming> I have no idea what you're talking about...
[18:06]<@BC_Programming> case lock?
[18:07]<jamer> Yeah
[18:08]<jamer> It's been too long of a damn day
[18:23]<jamer> I'll need at least a 4 pin CPU and a 8 pin CPU rail
[18:25]<@Calum> What are you building/tinkering with?
[18:46]<+camerongray> Hey Calum!
[18:46]<+camerongray> Oh and BC_Programming/jamer I suppose
[18:47]<+camerongray> Calum: You like servers don't you, especially shiny ones
[18:47]<+camerongray> Calum: Guess what we just ordered at work?
[18:50]<jamer> Calum a hp ml150 g6
[18:50]<jamer> I got it at work for free
[19:18]<jamer> O.o dead silent
[19:22]<+camerongray> Yeah, tower ones are quite good for noise
[19:22]<@BC_Programming> I thought he was referring to the chat
[19:24]<+camerongray> oh, maybe :P

[19:34]<@Calum> sorry, I was off in a game, didn't see anyone replying, my bad
[19:34]<jamer> Lol
[19:34]<@BC_Programming> 20 lashes
[19:34]<@Calum> jamer - not bad for free :)
[19:34]<@Calum> camerongray - what did you order?
[19:35]<+camerongray> Pair of HP DL180 g6s to act as new storage servers - Pair of Xeon L5640s and 64gb RAM each
[19:35]<+camerongray> Each is getting a pair of 250gb MX200s for boot/cache drives and the rest is being packed with 4tb WD SE drives
[19:35]<@Calum> Very nice
[19:35]<jamer> 2 320 gn hard drives, came with 4 gb though I put my 8 gb registered kit in and my 16 gb registered ram kit also
[19:36]<+camerongray> Calum: You think that's nice, that's the boring part
[19:36]<jamer> Tis true
[19:36]<jamer> The best is to come
[19:36]<@Calum> go on
[19:36]<+camerongray> We also ordered a pair of brand new Dell Poweredge R630s - Each with a pair of Xeon E5-2620 v3s with 128gb of DDR4 RAM
[19:36]<+camerongray> 10 2.5" drive bays getting packed with 1tb 7200rpm HDDs
[19:37]<@Calum> Tasty
[19:37]<+camerongray> Being used for Hadoop
[19:38]<@Calum> I wish I worked somewhere where we could buy good hardware like that...oh wait, I'm leaving tomorrow. That's pretty sweet
[19:38]<@Calum> Should be fun playing with all of that
[19:38]<jamer> Lol
[19:38]<+camerongray> nice, where are you going next?
[19:38]<@Calum> This place - http://www.synectics-solutions.com/
[19:39]<@Calum> They're a database-y type of place, so lots of hardware to play with
[19:39]<+camerongray> We realised that our office insurance isn't enough to cover those servers when they arrive so when they get delivered we are going to install Xenserver and drive them straight to the datacenter that day
[19:39]<+camerongray> nice!
[19:39]<@Calum> I think they said they have 3 separate data centres and a few hundred VMs
[19:39]<@Calum> hah, that's quite impressive
[19:39]<jamer> I wish I had a job like that :(
[19:40]<+camerongray> This is a trial, if they work well we'll get more
[19:40]<@Calum> nice
[19:40]<+camerongray> Also goign to get one for a remote Windows server for people to remotely use over RDP
[19:41]<+camerongray> We use software that connects into data stored in the DC (Has to be kept there for security) so the idea here is that the network between the PC and the data is way faster than the ADSL we have in both offices
[19:41]<+camerongray> It'll also be more powerful than the office PCs too of course
[19:41]<@Calum> Yeah, we've trialled remote app for some of our sites where the comms are dreadful, similar kind of situation except our staff are stupid and don't understand what to do
[19:42]<@Calum> The idea being that the server opening a 50mb CAD drawing is faster than them pulling that drawing over a 50k/sec line
[19:44]<jamer> Lol
[19:45]<@Calum> New place is all Dell I believe which is going to be a bit strange after a pure HP environment
[19:46]<jamer> I work in a basically all lenovo shop
[19:48]<+camerongray> We're pretty mixed where I am
[19:48]<+camerongray> Dell is probably the biggest brand we have but a lot of the servers are Supermicro and IBM
[19:48]<+camerongray> (Yes, IBM, they are old)
[19:49]<@Calum> We have a directive from "group" that everything has to be HP or Dell, I think only one business unit has some Dell stuff - couple of brand new ££££ CAD workstations and some ancient laptops, everyone else has just gone with HP
[20:03]<jamer> HP is a good brand for the business line
[20:06]<jamer> Camerongray you think I might be able to mod a connector and actually put normal fans on the server?
[20:06]<+camerongray> Maybe but why?
[20:06]<jamer> Aftermarket CPU cooler
[20:07]<+camerongray> What's wrong with the one it has though?
[20:07]<+camerongray> You definitely can mod things but with a machine like that I'd stick to the official parts
[20:08]<@BC_Programming> I think Datapuller should be using the SQLNextFlagCounter
[20:08]<@BC_Programming> uhh
[20:08]<@BC_Programming> hmm skype really changed their interface huh

[20:16]<jamer> Camerongray its going to be more than just a server ... I'm going to be doing more than just using it as a server
[20:16]<+camerongray> I still don't really see why it would need a new cooler though
[20:16]<+camerongray> Server cooling is very good, it's designed to run 24/7
[20:17]<@BC_Programming> Unless you are overclocking and literally causing more heat output than stock, there isn't a need to use an aftermarket cooler regardless of how much "more" a system will be doing
[20:17]<+camerongray> Servers are often used at 100% load
[20:17]<@BC_Programming> well yeah exactly
[20:17]<@BC_Programming> can't do much more than that lol
[20:17]<+camerongray> These R630s we bought will spend days with all cores and RAM totally maxed out
[20:18]<+camerongray> You'd almost never do that on a desktop
