[10:19]<Veltas> http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/07/windows-10-updates-to-be-automatic-and-mandatory-for-home-users/
[10:19]<Veltas> From a practical perspective this is probably a good thing... but quite honestly that's going to stop me upgrading
[10:19]<@BC_Programming> huh
[10:20]<@BC_Programming> and here I was thinking that it was so immensely stupid for them to force it, that it must be temporary during the insider program
[10:20]<@BC_Programming> well so much for that
[10:20]<+camerongray> hehehe
[10:21]<@BC_Programming> hello cam
[10:21]<+camerongray> Hey BC_Programming
[10:22]<@BC_Programming> my motherboard finally arrived the other day, gg tigerdirect
[10:22]<@BC_Programming> system runs quite well. The Budget build experiment has been a success
[10:23]<+camerongray> ahh nice!
[10:32]<Veltas> I kept meaning to do something like that
[10:32]<Veltas> But I don't have spare money ATM for budget builds, would rather spend money on actual upgrades
[10:33]<Veltas> sooooon
[10:33]<@BC_Programming> I have too much money... well, no, no such thing
[10:35]<Veltas> As soon as I get a job I'll always have too much money because I don't really spend money on stuff anyway
[10:36]<Veltas> I'm never going to spend more than £1500 on a main system, and then I can't be bothered to upgrade more than once every couple of years
[10:36]<Veltas> I would not know what to do with a salary
[10:38] * Quantos (QDuckswort@mib-6DD75DA6.ed.shawcable.net) has joined #glitchpc
[11:02]<+camerongray> I'm trying to be all sensible and save money
[11:06]<@BC_Programming> good luck
[11:06]<+camerongray> haha
[11:07]<+camerongray> Last month was expensive since everything came up for renewal at once (insurance, TV licence.etc) and I had all the costs associated with moving flat
[11:07]<+camerongray> But next month I'll try and put a decent bit away
[11:07]<+camerongray> I do need a new phone but only if I've already saved a decent amount
[11:08]<+camerongray> And even at that rate, I'll try to spend < £300 on that
[11:09]<@BC_Programming> I bought the 4-volume "Art of Computer Programming"
[11:11]<@BC_Programming> Also Programming F# 3.0 and Programming C# 5.0
[11:11]<@BC_Programming> http://www.amazon.ca/Computer-Programming-Volumes-1-4A-Boxed/dp/0321751043/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1437131455&sr=8-1&keywords=Art+of+Computer+Programming
[11:12]<@BC_Programming> I actually started reading it this time too, hooray
[11:22]<+camerongray> Facepalm @ Patio
[11:22]<+camerongray> http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,151359.0.html
[11:22]<+camerongray> "My XP system runs fine 24/7" and then implies that this means that the military are wasting money on additional XP support
[11:25]<+camerongray> I do like Allan though : http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,151464.msg932586.html#msg932586
[11:41]<Veltas> "need a new phone"
[11:42]<Veltas> Getting a smartphone was one of the biggest wastes of money I've had, I have not utilised that at all
[11:42]<Veltas> I think the only use is it's made me look like I don't live in the stoneage
[11:43]<Veltas> BC_Programming: I liked how stacks and queues are compared by looking at train track diagrams in art of computer programming
[11:44]<+camerongray> Well, I do use mine quite a lot, and it's really starting to act up
[11:45]<Veltas> I imagine there are lots of cheaper smartphones out there for well under £300, regardless
[11:45]<+camerongray> Well yeah, you can get one for under £100, but it's like a PC, the cheap ones are crap
[11:46]<Veltas> Depends what you're doing, and if it's second-hand, etc.
[11:46]<+camerongray> I'll probably get the One Plus Two or new Nexus 5 depending on how they compare when they are released
[11:47]<Veltas> Once again I'd guess Nexus 5 is better, One Plus was overrated, way too big (in my opinion)
[11:47]<Veltas> Will have to wait though yeah
[11:47]<Veltas> Lightning could strike
[11:48]<+camerongray> Hoping the One Plus Two is a bit smaller
[11:48]<+camerongray> I could just about cope with the One though
[11:48]<Veltas> If they did another Nexus 4 I'd definitely be interested. Nexus 5 isn't too big, but it could be a bit smaller
[11:49]<+camerongray> Yeah
[11:49]<Veltas> I like a phone I can almost use with one hand. I should get a stylus as well, really, I do keep loudly complaining about using a touchscreen
[11:49]<+camerongray> I have the Nexus 4 ATM
[11:50]<+camerongray> Not sure what is wrong with it but randomly the ringer won't work, quite often fails to play sound when calling, occasionally turns itself off and the camera flash causes the whole thing to sometimes reboot
[11:50]<+camerongray> Oh, and the camera is horiffic
[11:51]<Veltas> Sounds bad
[11:51]<Veltas> Although I don't care about the camera
[11:51]<Veltas> I mean I had a 0.4 megapixel camera for ages and it was functional, so the cameras on phones today all seem magical to me
[11:52]<+camerongray> haha
[11:54]<Veltas> I think my bother with a touchscreen is I had a PDA with a stylus and it was considerably easier and more accurate
[11:55]<+camerongray> I'm totally used to it now, never have issues really
[11:56]<Veltas> geek-9pm completely ruined that thread when he said "us navy still use XP"
[11:56]<+camerongray> The only stylus I use is on my tablet but that's a Wacom pen for taking notes in lectures
[11:56]<Veltas> Oh thanks geek-9pm, and the airforce still use computers from the 1960s, how is this relevant?
[11:56]<+camerongray> haha yeah
[11:57]<+camerongray> Fap fap fap, XP...
[11:57]<+camerongray> I really don't get the obsession
[11:57]<Veltas> It was pretty good
[11:57]<+camerongray> Was being the key word
[11:57]<Veltas> But basically everything about it can be one-upped by Windows 8.1
[11:57]<@BC_Programming> Fisher Price Windows
[11:58]<Veltas> Miss the button? classic shell. Don't like admin popups? You can turn those off (if you really care so little about security)
[11:58]<Veltas> Low resources? Yeah, Windows 8.1 also requires low resources (albeit not quite as low)
[11:58]<@BC_Programming> Then superdave saying that he doesn't think XP not getting updates is a problem, because fewer people with malware issues are using XP
[11:58]<@BC_Programming> that is a weird measuring stick
[11:59]<+camerongray> Yeah
[11:59]<+camerongray> Totally flawed
[12:00]<Veltas> patio's statement about buying support really was the icing on the cake
[12:00]<+camerongray> But SuperDave is a malware "expert" - We must obey his every word
[12:00]<@BC_Programming> I mean I get what he is saying but it's such a specific sample set it doesn't really make sense to generalize in any way
[12:01]<+camerongray> Well, less people are surely using XP nowadays
[12:01]<@BC_Programming> Fewer people may be seeking malware removal help who run XP because they have upgraded or switched to another OS
[12:01]<Veltas> It's a bit like saying "I don't get why people buy house insurance, my house hasn't burnt down"
[12:01]<+camerongray> And a lot of the average XP users are probably not doign nearly as much high risk stuff
[12:01]<@BC_Programming> "I don't know why people make such a big deal about things causing cancer, I don't have it"
[12:02]<Veltas> And also people forget that they probably were already buying support for XP every year anyway
[12:02]<+camerongray> And even then, it doesn't just come down to malware, what about backdoors and other heartbleed-esq bugs?
[12:03]<@BC_Programming> oddly EvilFantasy sort of started annoying me
[12:03]<Veltas> Well when that happens they'll forget that they ever supported XP usage "oh yeah no XP is a bad idea, out of support"
[12:04]<@BC_Programming> EF seems borderline tinfoil hatter methinks
[12:07]<+camerongray> What's he doing?
[12:07]<@BC_Programming> I have to look for the thread
[12:07]<@BC_Programming> it was actually a while ago
[12:07]<@BC_Programming> We disagreed about the whole NSA Snowden thing
[12:10]<@BC_Programming> ah found it
[12:10]<@BC_Programming> http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php?topic=149086.0
[12:12]<Veltas> Wow BC, always go in guns blazing
[12:13]<+camerongray> Haha, wow
[12:14]<+camerongray> LC is a full conspiracy theory nutter as well
[12:14]<@BC_Programming> Well I mean I'm all fine with skepticism and all that, but it seems odd that that skepticism seems to come to a stop when it comes to source information
[12:15]<@BC_Programming> When you have a news article saying "Kaspersky found NSA malware" and they link to a Kaspersky article as a source, I sort of expect the Kaspersky article to say they found NSA malware
[12:15]<+camerongray> Haha, yeah
[12:16]<@BC_Programming> Then as I point out a lot of other news sites have titles like "Your hard drives have been riddled with NSA malware for years" and link to a "source" which says absolutely nothing that would imply such
[12:19]<@BC_Programming> Geek-9pm is the funnest to deal with, I like is UEFI rants. But at the same time, I feel bad. It's like getting in a fight with a baby, they never seem to acknowledge what you said, what they say is unintelligible, and you feel bad for them.
[12:19]<+camerongray> Same with that whole thing about MS supposedly making pirated copies genuine with Windows 10
[12:19]<@BC_Programming> the several dozen Windows 10 articles there are ridonk
[12:20]<+camerongray> Yeah, I'm the same with Geek, I try not to argue with him now and just leave him to feel happy
[12:23]<@BC_Programming> damn, it's like 5AM
[12:25]<+camerongray> Haha
[12:26]<+camerongray> It just amazes me how many people in CH are of the mindset of if they make something up it becomes true
[12:27]<@BC_Programming> oh what was the recent run-in I had with geek, trying to remember
[12:28]<@BC_Programming> oh right, this beauty: http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,151294.0.html
[12:28]<@BC_Programming> "You need to buy a new mouse, it is defective" "The mouse works on another computer" "Doesn't matter, let me make up some EM bullshit"
[12:29]<+camerongray> Oh yeah, I remember that
[12:30]<+camerongray> Patio then chimes in saying it's a wireless phone
[12:30]<+camerongray> He really is stuck in the 90s
[12:31]<+camerongray> Like, do they not believe the people who design these products do actually know what they are doing and take things like that into account
[12:31]<@BC_Programming> I took efforts to be cordial there and stick to facts though, that was an ordeal, so much post editing
[12:31]<@BC_Programming> "Hmm, I think I can remove this paragraph about his head being up his ass"
[12:32]<+camerongray> Haha
[12:32]<@BC_Programming> I like how is text to speech makes everything about pirates
[12:32]<@BC_Programming> "piratical" instead of practical
[12:32]<+camerongray> I used to have my AP literally 10cm away from a keyboard dongle, no problems
[12:32]<+camerongray> It's as though Logitech thought about it!
[12:33]<@BC_Programming> Some of the linked threads he posted as a "source" were even funnier than what he posts
[12:33]<@BC_Programming> "I believe it was my interface drivers causing system interrupts which were peaking my processors."
[12:33]<@BC_Programming> gibberish
[12:33]<@BC_Programming> I think my band-aid got stuck in my waffle-iron which overheated my GPU
[12:34]<+camerongray> Yeah, like when be posts links to evidence of x being the issue when all those threads contain are people asking "could x be the issue?"
[12:35]<@BC_Programming> "PROOF!"
[12:35]<@BC_Programming> or "This search has more hits therefore it is correct"
[12:35]<Veltas> I like the search has more hits argument
[12:36]<@BC_Programming> and he doesn't even use quotes
[12:43]<Veltas> Making a new CH account, forgot Veltas details
[12:45]<Veltas> Oooh update on my bug, someone tried it on the master version and it still happens
[12:45]<Veltas> https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=350299
[13:09]<Veltas> See this is why I like KDE, because they're actually trying to make something usable, as useful as possible, and they have a really easy bug reporting system
[14:12]<Veltas> I just realised that the current stable release of Microsoft Windows and Debian is 8.1
