[19:03]<+camerongray> Hey Calum!
[19:03]<@Calum> hey camerongray
[19:05]<@Calum> Just doing some old(ish)-school overclocking with this random Xeon I ended up with, managed to kill another engineering sample hex-core so seeing what I can get out of this quad :P
[19:06]<@BC_Programming> hey ppl
[19:06]<@Calum> hey BC_Programming
[19:06]<@BC_Programming> The computer parts I ordered over a month ago still haven't arrived
[19:06]<@BC_Programming> well that's not true, I got the power supply
[19:06]<@Calum> wow, how come? Are they sending it via literal snail mail?
[19:06]<@BC_Programming> I have decided that TigerDirect sucks
[19:07]<@BC_Programming> I think it was because they had to drop-ship to their warehouse first
[19:07]<@BC_Programming> thing is my tracking info is useless, it just shows the shipment TO the warehouse, and it was delivered on the 23rd
[19:07]<@BC_Programming> heck if I know if they even sent it yet... I kind of complained with their contact form
[19:09]<@Calum> that's pretty bad, I'd have complained as well
[19:09]<@BC_Programming> they've always been strangely slow for shipping- I've gotten stuff from China faster
[19:10]<@BC_Programming> Do Xeon's overclock very well?
[19:10]<@Calum> some do, they're generally about the same as the equivalent i5/i7 if there is one
[19:10]<@Calum> some are better because they're binned for lower voltages
[19:10]<@BC_Programming> I think they have more cache or something like that
[19:11]<@Calum> depends on the model, some do, some are basically identical to an i5/i7 apart from being able to use ECC RAM
[19:12]<@BC_Programming> ah yes, memory controllers have been on the CPU now for some time
[19:12]<@Calum> the one I randomly have is just an i7 950 with lower TDP, theoretically should overclock a little better, I'm just interested in seeing what I can get out of it
[19:12]<@Calum> I had a couple of engineering sample 6 cores but they've mostly all died in one way or another or got very flaky
[19:13]<@BC_Programming> I don't think I've ever tried to overclock anything... if I Did I'd likely get a non-stock cooler at any rate
[19:13]<@BC_Programming> That would have the nice benefit of not being a massive pain in the ass to install too
[19:13]<@Calum> I haven't clocked my own PC for quite a while now, mainly because I've been using a Dell workstation for the last few months, but just because I haven't been bothered to
[19:13]<@Calum> Yeah, those push pins are a nightmare
[19:14]<@BC_Programming> seems like I'd need a better cooler to use my new QX6700 Extreme in my old PC anyway, runs way to hot with the same cooler on my Q8200
[19:15]<@Calum> QX6700, what a beast
[19:15]<@BC_Programming> yeah figured I'd get the best CPU for my old system I could
[19:15]<@BC_Programming> evidently didn't consider cooling considerations
[19:17]<@Calum> They're getting quite rare these days
[19:17]<@BC_Programming> yeah it was only 30 dollars or so if I recall
[19:17]<@Calum> Oh, that's pretty cheap
[19:18]<@BC_Programming> I need to stop buying computer/programming books
[19:18]<@BC_Programming> I never read them!
[19:19]<@Calum> Heh
[19:19]<@BC_Programming> and yet I bought this: http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/0321751043?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
[19:19]<@Calum> that's quite the doorstop there, 3168 pages
[19:20]<@BC_Programming> 4 volumes
[19:20]<@BC_Programming> an expensive bookshelf decoration is what it will probably end up being lol
[19:20]<@BC_Programming> now if I could send it through a time portal to myself 10 years ago then I'd have read them repeatedly
[19:21]<@Calum> Yeah I know what you mean, I often wish I could've read stuff ages ago when I had the time
[19:22]<@BC_Programming> I guess you may have seen it on FB but Microsoft for some reason reawarded me with the 2015 MVP Award, I can put off scrambling to sort out my MS licenses for another year at least I guess
[19:23]<@Calum> Hah, yeah I saw that, congrats :)
[19:27]<@BC_Programming> stupid forest fires... it's actually "sunny" out but it looks overcast from all the smoke
