[00:00] * Topic is 'Welcome to #glitchpc chat. Profanity, trolls, and impersonation are not welcome here. Street1 has become a Silent Keyboard. http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/savannah/obituary.aspx?page=lifestory&pid=139870551'
[00:00] * Set by jacky on Tue Mar 02 18:03:23
[00:04]<@BC_Programming> also sometimes I wonder if my parents are retarded
[00:04]<@BC_Programming> started raining in my bathroom. Their washing machine overflowed upstairs
[00:04]<@BC_Programming> fair enough, we clean everything up
[00:04]<@BC_Programming> few hours later now
[00:04]<@BC_Programming> it starts raining again
[00:05]<@BC_Programming> they used the washing machine again. That is the definition of insanity

[18:50]<@BC_Programming> Is Antec a good PSU brand?
[20:01]<+camerongray> Depends on the unit
[20:01]<+camerongray> They have a lot of good ones, a lot of "meh" ones
[20:01]<@BC_Programming> well I ended up speccing a very cheap build
[20:01]<+camerongray> They don't really make crap ones nowdays anyway, they have in the past
[20:01]<+camerongray> What sort of machine,any GPU ?
[20:02]<@BC_Programming> No, on-board graphics
[20:02]<@BC_Programming> $261 total
[20:02]<+camerongray> Ahh yeah, the very low end Antecs (the VP line) are a bit poop, rest are okay
[20:02]<+camerongray> For that I'd recommend one of the Seasonic OEM units, very well priced
[20:03]<+camerongray> http://www.newegg.ca/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=-1&IsNodeId=1&Description=seasonic&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=30
[20:03]<+camerongray> http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151147&cm_re=seasonic-_-17-151-147-_-Product is a good one
[20:03]<@BC_Programming> AMD Sempron 3850 1.3Ghz, Gigabyte AMD AM1 FS1b GA-AM1M-S2H, 4GB DDR3, Antec Vsk 4000e Case, Antec 450 Watt VP-450, and 160GB WD Blue
[20:04]<+camerongray> Ahh yeah, the VP is a bit poop, I'd go with the Seasonic
[20:04]<@BC_Programming> Basically went bottom of the barrel for a lot of it. It's only going to be needed for browsing
[20:04]<+camerongray> (don't tell patio I'm saying this or he'll flip) but notice the red voltage switch on that antec - Sure sign it's stripped down and doesn't have active PFC
[20:04]<+camerongray> Hmm, for yourself?
[20:04]<@BC_Programming> No for my parents
[20:05]<+camerongray> Ahh cool, that makes sense
[20:05]<@BC_Programming> in case I can't get this Inspiron 531s working
[20:05]<@BC_Programming> (which would be annoying since I bought a new PSU and Graphics card for it)
[20:05]<+camerongray> What's wrong with it?
[20:06]<@BC_Programming> It is a hand-me-down to my parents from my Uncle who found it in his storage when he went ot get his motorcycle
[20:06]<+camerongray> ahh cool
[20:07]<@BC_Programming> same system that I installed my Wireless-G network card in in 2006 and never got back lol
[20:07]<+camerongray> I'd also probably go for an mATX case instead of that ATX one - No point having it sitting with loads of empty space (again, don't tell patio :P)
[20:07]<+camerongray> (he has a near phobia of mATX)
[20:08]<@BC_Programming> HDD was borked- I didn't even bother trying to boot from it at all- can't really look at anything with my external SATA/USB thing, just constant click of death
[20:08]<+camerongray> ah
[20:08]<@BC_Programming> so I slapped in a 500GB I had lying around
[20:08]<@BC_Programming> Started up Linux Mint but wasn't able to install it, moment I clicked the "Install Linux Mint" icon the screen turned to a garbled mess
[20:09]<@BC_Programming> tried to install KUbuntu and was able to get that started but the Window decorations were missing or screwed up, obvious graphics problem
[20:09]<@BC_Programming> went to bed while it was installing and woke up and the system was off and refused to power on- PSU failed overnight, lol
[20:11]<@BC_Programming> I thought maybe the PSU failing was the problem to begin with, and didn't want to get a dedicated card to fix it unless I knew it would fix it- so I used my normal sized PSU from my old desktop (not in the case obviously) and hooked it up- Same issues. Was able to get the graphics card (my old 9800GT) from that system into it as well and KUbuntu booted up just fine with no graphical problems
[20:11]<+camerongray> Ahh, onboard must be dad
[20:11]<+camerongray> dead*
[20:11]<@BC_Programming> so I got a new ITX PSU and a low-profile GT200
[20:11]<@BC_Programming> or rather, they are on their way
[20:12]<@BC_Programming> which <should> fix it and allow the case to be closed (unlike my frankensteining with full-sized components)
[20:12]<+camerongray> Ahh cool, hopefully
[20:12]<@BC_Programming> would be a shame to lose a chance to build a computer again :P
[20:12]<+camerongray> <patio mode>It's small form factor, you are the worst person, that machine should be killed, it is useless</patio mode>
[20:13]<@BC_Programming> I think you are well aware how much respect I have for Patio's opinions and advice in general
[20:13]<+camerongray> haha
[20:13]<@BC_Programming> They certainly are a pain in the ass though
[20:13]<+camerongray> Depends on what it is
[20:14]<+camerongray> He even objects to microATX towers
[20:14]<+camerongray> You know, the ones that are just a little bit shorter with a couple less slots
[20:14]<@BC_Programming> At least this one is fairly accessible inside, it has that going for it I suppose
[20:14]<+camerongray> Basically stuck in the 90s where having 4 slots was a problem, hardly matters nowadays
[20:14]<@BC_Programming> 5-1/4" bays? you mean?
[20:15]<@BC_Programming> Pretty much only need one these days I think
[20:15]<@BC_Programming> and that is only if you want an Optical drive
[20:15]<@BC_Programming> you can usually hide SSDs in all sorts of places too
[20:17]<@BC_Programming> I chose the case purely because it was the cheapest one that didn't look/sound like a chinese special
[20:18]<+camerongray> His argument was for the PCI slots
[20:18]<+camerongray> Because like, having 4 is way too few...
[20:18]<@BC_Programming> what? How...
[20:18]<+camerongray> Lets just ignore my friend who has a Crossfire setup on a MicroATX board
[20:19]<+camerongray> Oh wait, I can't tell him that either, he's scared of crossfire
[20:19]<@BC_Programming> Well I mean pretty much everything is on the motherboard- usually you'll just have a graphics card installed in a slot
[20:19]<@BC_Programming> and if you are insane, maybe a Sound Card (Like me)
[20:19]<+camerongray> yeah, that's what he can't compute
[20:20]<+camerongray> Oh well, at least now I've given up on the chat I only need to deal with him on the forum
[20:20]<+camerongray> I mean, he's a nice enough guy, but so stuck in his ways it's unreal!
[20:20]<+camerongray> Anyway - That case - It's okay but don't expect Antec build quality, it's fairly thin
[20:20]<@BC_Programming> did he actually give any examples of the sorts of things you would need slots for?
[20:20]<+camerongray> Nope
[20:21]<+camerongray> Cheap, solidly built case: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811352039&cm_re=fractal_design_core-_-11-352-039-_-Product
[20:21]<@BC_Programming> I mean I'm thinking- if you have a 386? Yeah, you need a lot of slots. You'll need a HDD controller- probably an I/O card for Serial and Parallel, a sound card if you want, video card, and a network card to get full functionality, but it has bee na long time since you've needed that much guff installed
[20:22]<+camerongray> Drive mounts are a bit unusual but they work fine
[20:22]<+camerongray> And it's a really nicely made case
[20:22]<@BC_Programming> hmm I'm trying to limit how many places have my CC info and never bought from newegg before tbh
[20:22]<+camerongray> Ahh
[20:23]<+camerongray> TigerDirect have it, but it's $51
[20:23]<@BC_Programming> yeah just found that
[20:23]<@BC_Programming> close enough probably
[20:23]<+camerongray> This is the older model of it: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7533023&CatId=3427
