[16:39]<+camerongray> Lenovo have actually listened to customers and put the physical trackpoint buttons back on the ThinkPad T450s
[16:40]<@BC_Programming> cool!
[16:40]<@BC_Programming> are they out yet?
[16:40]<+camerongray> Nah, just been announced
[16:40]<+camerongray> Still waiting on Broadwell
[16:40]<@BC_Programming> darn
[16:40]<+camerongray> I really hope that for some miracle the new touchpad will fit my T440s - It's the exact same size but I'm not sure how the connectors on them work
[16:40]<@BC_Programming> oh well I realized I won't have enough for a laptop this pay anyway given that we were closed :P
[16:41]<+camerongray> If it doesn't I'll probably end up buying one and spending an absolute fortune
[16:41]<+camerongray> The current one is INFURIATING
[16:41]<@BC_Programming> Yeah I don't like touchpads at all... I just tolerate them
[16:41]<+camerongray> For me the issue is the non-physical trackpoint buttons
[16:41]<+camerongray> Since that's what I use
[16:42]<@BC_Programming> oh geez
[16:42]<@BC_Programming> touch activated buttons or something?
[16:42]<+camerongray> Simple things like clicking a tab in Chrome - Because I use my right thumb to click, I reach over the center "button" to left click. Half the time I don't move my hand enough and center click which closes the tab!
[16:42]<@BC_Programming> zero tacility?
[16:42]<+camerongray> Oh no, it's tactile
[16:42]<+camerongray> But they are software buttons
[16:42]<+camerongray> http://17c4dcd7f91259d8cc66-f5932f6db0039e8c02f89a70c334ff0e.r2.cf1.rackcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/touchpad.jpg
[16:42]<@BC_Programming> It's like my laptop's stupid 'feature' where the right side is a scroll wheel
[16:42]<+camerongray> Which also makes Linux support really fun to set up
[16:43]<@BC_Programming> oh so it does press down
[16:43]<+camerongray> Yeah
[16:43]<@BC_Programming> but it is like a rocker thing
[16:43]<+camerongray> It all goes down in one go, it uses the touch surface to work out where your finger is
[16:43]<+camerongray> Fairly clever, but also sucks
[16:43]<@BC_Programming> so it is sort of touch-related
[16:43]<@BC_Programming> that would be annoying on the same level as my laptop's aforementioned "feature"
[16:43]<+camerongray> It's okay for a touchpad, but not for the trackpoint buttons since you have no way to feel where the buttons are other than a very small row of dots
[16:44]<+camerongray> They don't seem to have solved the screen bezel issue though which means that if I do get a new one, I'll need to spend ~£160 more on the touchscreen model
[16:45]<+camerongray> I don't want a touchscreen but at least that has glass over the screen
[16:46]<+camerongray> Once it comes out I'll try to order a T450 touchpad and test it on mine, thanks to the UK's glorious consumer protection laws, as long as I keep it in resellable condition I could return it if it doesn't work
[16:47]<@BC_Programming> you mean swap out your touchpad?
[16:47]<+camerongray> Yeah
[16:47]<@BC_Programming> cool
[16:47]<+camerongray> I don't need any of the other upgrades, it's just that
[16:47]<+camerongray> I don't know how the connectors work though
[16:47]<+camerongray> Like is it a USB/PS/2 interface or is it a propriatery interface and a controller on the board
[16:47]<@BC_Programming> yeah could be different, I doubt that is standardized
[16:47]<+camerongray> Since if it's the latter it may not work but if it's the former it probably will
[16:48]<@BC_Programming> though as I understand even laptop screens use Display Port
[16:48]<@BC_Programming> so perhaps there has been more standardization to at least make them electrically compatible
[16:48]<+camerongray> LVDS I think
[16:48]<+camerongray> It's a standardised interface but the connectors are not standardised
[16:49]<+camerongray> The rest of the machine looks identical though so I'd like to think they haven't changed that interface
[16:49]<+camerongray> It will be something ridiculous like £100 for a touchpad replacement but still cheaper than the £600 or so I'd be out of pocket for a new machine (after selling my T440s)
[16:50]<@BC_Programming> I'm still researching on the whole new laptop idea I had
[16:50]<@BC_Programming> I'm starting to think I don't really want a new laptop I just want a "new thing" to mess with.
[16:51]<@BC_Programming> I discounted the Y50 since apparently when using lower resolutions it uses a smaller display area as far as I could tell
[16:51]<+camerongray> hahah yeah, I do that
[16:51]<+camerongray> I get bored of one thing and want another
[16:52]<+camerongray> Definitely don't buy a current gen ThinkPad since they are about to fix them
[16:52]<@BC_Programming> yeah if I get a thinkpad I will wait for the next gen
[16:53]<@BC_Programming> are they still made with magnesium cases or has lenovo cheaped out since
[16:53]<+camerongray> Yeah, at least on the premium lines
[16:53]<+camerongray> Like the T, X and W series
[16:54]<+camerongray> Not the Edge or L series, but those were always plastic
[16:54]<@BC_Programming> oh cool
[16:54]<+camerongray> They have changed a bit to make them thinner and lighter
[16:54]<+camerongray> My T440s has a magnesium base but a carbon fibre lid
[16:54]<+camerongray> So it's still very strong
[16:54]<@BC_Programming> oh well of course :P my 755CDV was like 2 inches thick or something
[16:54]<+camerongray> Unlike my friend who dropped an exercise weight THROUGH his D620's lid
[16:55]<@BC_Programming> why would he do that
[16:55]<@BC_Programming> :P
[16:55]<+camerongray> Threw the weight on his bed, laptop was on the floor, weight bounced :P
[16:55]<@BC_Programming> hah
[16:56]<+camerongray> http://imgur.com/a/X0tGy
[16:57]<@BC_Programming> that'll buff right out
[16:57]<+camerongray> lol
[16:57]<+camerongray> He ended up giving me it after buying a new one, I was able to get a whole top half for £30 which fixed it :D
[16:57]<@BC_Programming> hehe
[16:57]<+camerongray> It's nothing insane but handy as a knock around machine or if I need a physical serial port
[16:58]<+camerongray> Core Duo, 4gb RAM
[16:58]<@BC_Programming> Better than mine, mine is a Dual Core
[16:59]<+camerongray> Is use 32 or 64bit?
[16:59]<+camerongray> The Core Duo is only 32 which is a slight pain
[16:59]<@BC_Programming> 64-bit T3200
[17:00]<+camerongray> Ahh yeah, this is only 32bit
[17:00]<+camerongray> But hey, It works
[17:00]<+camerongray> And is pretty quick too
[17:01]<@BC_Programming> ACtually now that I think about it one new thing that I could actually use is a Printer
[17:01]<@BC_Programming> the one I have doesn't have any not-crap drivers given it's over 10 years old or something
[17:02]<+camerongray> Ahh yeah
[17:03]<+camerongray> Get a laser one :P Inkjets nowadays suck
[17:03]<@BC_Programming> yes that is definitely my thought
[17:03]<+camerongray> My parents have a brand new HP Photosmart and my old 1999 LaserJet 4050 - Guess which one they use :P
[17:03]<@BC_Programming> the laserjet duh
[17:03]<+camerongray> yep
[17:03]<+camerongray> Since it actually works properly
[17:04]<+camerongray> For Christmas I set them up a Raspberry Pi so my mum can print to it from her iPad
[17:05]<@BC_Programming> Current printer sometimes doesn't show up as a installed printer, and when it does and I try to print nothing happens, nothing shows up in the print queue, etc. Pain in the butt
[17:05]<+camerongray> Thankfully the printer itself has a network card fitted (Otherwise all it has is Parallel or Serial)
[17:05]<+camerongray> So the rPi connects to the printer's network share and exposes it as a second network share that the iPad understands
[17:05]<@BC_Programming> Lexmark Z816 from early 2000's I think
[17:06]<+camerongray> My friend was telling me that back in college he used to hack the printers
[17:06]<+camerongray> They all had infrared ports which weren't blocked but they charged for printing over the network
[17:06]<@BC_Programming> change their messages.. "insert purple paper"
[17:07]<+camerongray> He used to sit with his infrared capable laptop next to the printer in classes and then run a local printserver for his friends to print to the printer for free
[17:07]<+camerongray> Oh we did that one in school
[17:07]<+camerongray> "Out of laser" was one of them
[17:08]<+camerongray> Ahh cool, I still have a photo from it: http://imgur.com/5jkfhEz
[17:08]<@BC_Programming> heh
[17:15]<+camerongray> Fun times
[17:15]<+camerongray> Although now since Uni is Linux based we have loads of config files to play with
[17:15]<+camerongray> Totally got my friend a while ago
[17:16]<+camerongray> Best thing to ever do if you see a Linux machine unlocked
[17:16]<+camerongray> Put this one line in the person's .bashrc file: echo sleep 0.1 >>~/.bashrc
[17:16]<+camerongray> Every time they launch a terminal it will take 0.1 seconds longer the next time
[17:17]<+camerongray> He had it taking like 30 seconds before I felt the need to point it out
[17:18]<@BC_Programming> lol
[17:18]<+camerongray> The other one we built would start the screen rotating and open/close the DVD drive :P
[17:19]<+camerongray> The trick is to build big complex ones and store them on a server, then all you need to do is wget them on the victim's machine
