[12:02]<PCdoc> should have said it here
[12:02]<PCdoc> they added google search bar inside mozilla firefox blank tab page in the new update and made the tiles small
[12:02]<+camerongray> Hooray! (or something)
[12:05]<PCdoc> the about:config page shows the address of google. will try change it to yahoo and see if it changes to yahoo :P

[12:10]<+camerongray> jacky: Am I right in thinking you used to be/are into Amateur Radio stuff?
[12:10]<@jacky> correct
[12:11]<@jacky> and Peanuts Happy Dances ....
[12:11]<@jacky> :)
[12:11]<+camerongray> Cool - I just got a Software Defined Radio, been playing around with it
[12:11]<+camerongray> lol
[12:11]<@jacky> that is waaaay newer than me
[12:11]<+camerongray> Ahh, it's pretty cool
[12:11]<@jacky> got a link that describes it?
[12:11]<+camerongray> Basically a scanner but most of it is implemented in software rather than hardware
[12:11]<+camerongray> So the actual hadware is basically an interface between the antenna and a PC - Software does all the tuning.etc
[12:12]<@jacky> what is the range of bands (frequencies) that it will receive?
[12:12]<+camerongray> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software-defined_radio
[12:12]<+camerongray> My one gets 25-1.2ghz but that's a super cheap £10 one
[12:12]<@jacky> and is there a link for your specific model, too?
[12:12]<+camerongray> Ahh yeah
[12:12]<+camerongray> http://www.amazon.co.uk/KEEDOX%C2%AE-RTL-SDR-Receiver-Realtek-RTL2832U/dp/B009VBUYA0/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1406650355&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=keebox+sdr - It's sold as a TV tuner
[12:12]<@jacky> 1.2 gig?!!?? that's way up there. barring unusual atmospheric conditions, anything you receive there, is very line-of-site
[12:12]<@jacky> loading links... brb
[12:13]<+camerongray> I also have an RF Upconverter (Called a Ham-It-Up) that lets it pick up lower frequencies (i.e. all the shortwave stuff)
[12:13]<+camerongray> It basically shifts all frequencies up by 125mhz so to get 1mhz I just connect it and tune to 126mhz
[12:13]<@jacky> <+camerongray> My one gets 25-1.2ghz b <<< 25 ? 25 what? MHz or what?
[12:14]<+camerongray> Oh yeah, MHz :P
[12:14]<@jacky> are you near it right now? can you listen to it now?
[12:14]<+camerongray> Unfortunately not
[12:14]<+camerongray> At work :P
[12:14]<@jacky> ah.. :(
[12:14]<@jacky> let me know sometime, when you are near it
[12:14]<+camerongray> Ahh yeah, will do
[12:15]<+camerongray> Actually, if you want to play with an SDR: http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901/ - Can use this one over the internet
[12:15]<@jacky> in the meantime... 28.000 MHz up to... (trying to remember) around 29.7 is the ten meter band
[12:15]<@jacky> will it do SSB ?
[12:15]<@jacky> Upper Side Band, and Lower Side Band reception?
[12:15]<+camerongray> Yeah
[12:15]<@jacky> on the 10 meter band, use USB
[12:15]<+camerongray> Yeah, been playing quite a bit
[12:15]<+camerongray> All I need is a better antenna
[12:15]<@jacky> lowest part of the band will be CW (morse code)
[12:16]<+camerongray> yeah, picked up some morse
[12:16]<@jacky> around 28.3 and up, will be USB voice
[12:16]<@jacky> but... that band is highly affected by the ionosphere
[12:16]<@jacky> might hear very little
[12:16]<@jacky> what do you have for an antenna?
[12:17]<+camerongray> Just a bit of old wire hanging out the window :P
[12:17]<@jacky> ( the antenna is actually the most important part of any system ... my opinion)
[12:17]<@jacky> that is not the best, but it is waaaay better than nothing!
[12:17]<@jacky> :)
[12:17]<@jacky> the bigger the better
[12:17]<+camerongray> Going to get an active one and either stick it out the window or in the attic
[12:17]<+camerongray> Big issue within being in an apartment :P
[12:17]<@jacky> active?
[12:17]<+camerongray> You plug power into it and magic happens or something :P
[12:17]<@jacky> hmmm...
[12:17]<+camerongray> My friend told me to get one :P
[12:17]<@jacky> how much $$ ?
[12:18]<@jacky> this friend is telling you: the bigger the better. heh
[12:18]<+camerongray> They seem to go for around £50 on eBay but will see if I can find a cheaper one
[12:18]<@jacky> and the higer the better.
[12:18]<+camerongray> Bigger would be better, but I don't have any outside space
[12:18]<+camerongray> Thankfully I am on the 3rd floor
[12:18]<@jacky> if it stays up for more than one year, it is either not high enough, or not big enough <<< old rule of thumb. heheehehe
[12:18]<+camerongray> How would one work in an attic under a slate roof?
[12:18]<+camerongray> lol!
[12:19]<@jacky> <+camerongray> Bigger would be better, but I don't have any outside space <<< keep reading/researching/talking around. You have a creative mind, and I suspect that you don't mind bending a couple rules. :)
[12:19]<+camerongray> lol - I need to watch though, lots of rules about antennas in the development I live in
[12:19]<@jacky> <+camerongray> How would one work in an attic under a slate roof? <<< not as well as one that is at 100 feet on a tower in the clear, but way better than nothing! :)
[12:20]<+camerongray> Ahh cool, I could always try it
[12:20]<+camerongray> I don't need anything amazing
[12:20]<@jacky> <+camerongray> lol - I need to watch though, lots of rules about antennas in the development I live in <<< it is easier to get forgiveness that it is permission <<<<< another old rule
[12:20]<@jacky> :)
[12:20]<@jacky> use VERY thin wire... they won't even see it
[12:21]<+camerongray> lol
[12:21]<+camerongray> I have thought about doing something between the windows yeah
[12:21]<@jacky> see? see??
[12:21]<+camerongray> hehe
[12:22]<+camerongray> Currently waiting on some proper connectors so that will help
[12:22]<@jacky> or.. dream up something that you can quickly set up after dark, and take down when you are done (before sun-up)
[12:22]<+camerongray> Currently have random bits of wire betweenthe SDR and upconverter so interference is crazy
[12:22]<@jacky> impedance matching will help
[12:22]<+camerongray> ahh yeah
[12:22]<@jacky> :)
[12:22]<+camerongray> I'll see how I get on and let you know
[12:23]<@jacky> but is not *necessary* for just receiving
[12:23]<@jacky> please do
[12:23]<+camerongray> Very fun to play with, especially since it's so cheap
[12:23]<@jacky> like fishing... you never know what you are going to get
[12:23]<@jacky> google for information on band plan for amateur radio, for UK
[12:24]<@jacky> that's what we call it... band plan
[12:24] * Nat (nat@mib-9777B5D6.lightspeed.irvnca.sbcglobal.net) has joined #glitchpc
[12:24]<@jacky> a chart the shows all that allowed freqs
[12:24]<@jacky> I don't know them any more... and I'm sure they are slightly different over there
[12:24]<@jacky> they overlap a lot, of course, worldwide, else, nobody would be able to talk to other countries
[12:24]<@jacky> does the little receiver do FM too?
[12:25]<+camerongray> Yeah
[12:26]<+camerongray> FM, AM, USB, LSB, DSB, Raw and something else starting with a C
[12:26]<@jacky> I wonder what raw is?
[12:26]<+camerongray> It's all done in software so the hardware doesn't really matter for the decoding
[12:26]<@jacky> fm ... here, that is popular in the VHF range, and up. 146MHz (two meter band) and up
[12:27] * Nat (nat@mib-9777B5D6.lightspeed.irvnca.sbcglobal.net) Quit (Ping timeout)
[12:27]<@jacky> "C" ? CW perhaps ?
[12:28]<+camerongray> I think so
[12:28]<@jacky> means continuous waves ... amounts to "morse code" type of comms
[12:28]<@jacky> :)
[12:29]<@jacky> ok... I forgot that you said you are at work
[12:29]<@jacky> sorry to hold you
[12:29]<@jacky> :)
[12:31]<+camerongray> ahh cool
