[11:51]<@BC_Programming> cam: yeah I unsubbed
[11:53]<Quantos> Heya BC
[12:45] * Guest47706 (uid8068@mib-DEE87C23.irccloud.com) has joined #glitchpc
[12:45]<@BC_Programming> Hey quantos
[12:46]<@BC_Programming> that is called a massive response time hah
[12:47]<+camerongray> Not sure I'd go as far as unsubbing, but the thing about using Windows embeded was stupid
[12:47]<+camerongray> Especially on his new i5 machine
[12:47]<Quantos> LOL
[12:47]<@BC_Programming> yeah actually I unsubbed because I saw that pattern
[12:47]<Quantos> Afternoon Cam
[12:47]<+camerongray> Hey Quantos
[12:47]<@BC_Programming> he also mentioned how embedded was going to keep getting updates
[12:48]<+camerongray> Yeah
[12:48]<@BC_Programming> then deleted my comment when I corrected him- it will get updates, however it will only get updates to the POS system, because the security updates are only downloaded by virtue of Embedded also being XP, so it get's all the XP updates
[12:48]<+camerongray> I really don't understand that mentality
[12:48]<+camerongray> People almost see it as "cool" to keep using XP
[12:48]<Quantos> Hehehhe, you said mental
[12:49]<Quantos> If they want to truly be cool they need Linux
[12:49]<@BC_Programming> XP should be used on systems that will work better with XP than later versions. eg. probably a P4. a i5? no
[12:49]<+camerongray> yeah
[12:49]<Quantos> Are there even XP drivers for a unit that new?
[12:50]<@BC_Programming> I'd be surprised
[12:50]<Quantos> I'm considering throwing a dual boot on this POS, Linux and XP
[12:51]<+camerongray> I mean, the only people that have an excuse to use XP is on old hardware - But considering how cheap you can get a good PC for nowadays, even that's a bad reason
[12:54]<+camerongray> I'll still watch his videos as they are quite interesting, but the whole using XP thing is dumb
[12:54]<@BC_Programming> XP needs to be monkey-patched an awful lot to be used on a modern PC. SATA/AHCI, USB3, not to mention no desktop compositing
[12:54]<+camerongray> BC_Programming: I take it you know of bbishoppcm and uxwbill though?
[12:54]<@BC_Programming> main thing that turned me off was that he simply deleted my comment
[12:54]<+camerongray> They are probably my favorite
[12:54]<@BC_Programming> no response to the sourced information about how windows updates works and why saying "it will still receive updates" is slightly misleading
[12:55]<Quantos> Yeah, I know, but that
[12:55]<Quantos> s what my core2duo came with originally
[12:55]<+camerongray> Yeah - That's the only issue with that, a lot of good machines came with XP
[12:55]<+camerongray> I have a pair of Core Duo Laptops, but they are only licenced for XP
[12:56]<@BC_Programming> then you have new 64-bit CPUs with AHCI working only in 32-bit protected mode and with IDE compatibility
[12:56]<+camerongray> Yeah
[12:56]<+camerongray> I love playing with old stuff (as you can probably tell) but I'd never use it for anything productive
[12:57]<Quantos> Yeah, I probably won't do it though, I really don't like MS
[12:57]<Quantos> They lost me long ago
[12:59]<@BC_Programming> How is that Quantos?
[13:00]<Quantos> I don't like their business practices, I don't like their software. As far as I'm concerned it's just overpriced junk
[13:00]<Quantos> There's a lot of reasons actually, I don't know that any of them are enough on their own
[13:00]<Quantos> But you combine them and it makes sense for me
[13:01]<Quantos> I'm also not a heavy gamer, so Linux is an excellent choice for me
[13:03]<+camerongray> I prefer Linux for my day-to-day stuff, but I still like Windows
[13:05]<Quantos> Don't get me wrong, I still use Windows on one of my machines, but that's just to help with supporting them
[13:06]<Quantos> And every single time that I use win8 I find that I hate it more and more
[13:06]<@BC_Programming> Yes. Personally, I think that somebody should be using Linux because they like Linux and the idea of Open Source, not because they hate MS. Decisions based on hate or dislike of something are more likely to glaze over shortcomings of the chosen alternative.
[13:07]<Quantos> Yeah, exactly
[13:07]<@BC_Programming> Though Open Source has to deal with controlling RMS
[13:07]<@BC_Programming> that guys a loose cannon
[13:07]<Quantos> And not all OSS is free either, many people make that mistake
[13:08]<+camerongray> Yeah, there's a guy at uni like that - Really starting to piss people off
[13:08]<Quantos> What guys a loose cannon?
[13:08]<@BC_Programming> Richard Stallman
[13:08]<Quantos> Doesn't sound familiar
[13:08]<+camerongray> The free software foundation guy
[13:08]<+camerongray> Who eats stuff from his own feet at the front of a conference
[13:08]<@BC_Programming> that was my favourite
[13:08]<Quantos> Eeew
[13:09]<@BC_Programming> then after he's all "no, I was protesting social norms saying we can't eat our dead skin"
[13:09]<Quantos> Brain damage, fer sure
[13:09]<+camerongray> Wait, he said that?
[13:09]<@BC_Programming> yeah he said something like that, about protesting social norms or something dumb
[13:09]<+camerongray> Sounds just like this guy at uni - Hates any sort of authority
[13:10]<Quantos> Funny place for a guy like that
[13:10]<@BC_Programming> "Who are you to tell me I can or cannot eat my own skin, huh?"
[13:10]<@BC_Programming> "Don't tell me what is and is not poison!"
[13:10]<+camerongray> Quantos: Oh, so many people at uni are like that
[13:10]<Quantos> That's wrong on so many levels I don't even know where to begin
[13:10]<+camerongray> Not so much in informatics though
[13:10]<+camerongray> For example, the other day there was a guy ouside the library with a record player
[13:10]<Quantos> Informatics still sounds like a transformer to me
[13:11]<+camerongray> haha
[13:11]<@BC_Programming> Informatics, files in disguise
[13:11]<Quantos> HEhehee
[13:11]<@BC_Programming> transformers that cna turn into manilla folders
[13:12]<Quantos> I like french manilla ice cream
[13:12]<@BC_Programming> they are like the real transformers but go around solving accounting problems
[13:12]<Quantos> Like the constipated mathematician
[13:12]<Quantos> He worked it out with a pencil
[13:12]<+camerongray> hehehe
[13:12]<@BC_Programming> "So you see, you can easily move these records to accounts receivable, and save your company a good tax burden!"
[13:12]<@BC_Programming> "Thanks Optimus file!"
[13:13]<Quantos> LMAO
[13:14]<Quantos> Hey, I just got my belated Valentines day gift from my gf
[13:14]<Quantos> She got me an Olympus camera
[13:14]<+camerongray> nice!
[13:15]<Quantos> That's what I thought, it's not the best but does a great job none the less
[13:16]<@BC_Programming> "it's not the best but does a great job none the less" Careful, you don't want her to see you talking about her
[13:16]<Quantos> No, she's pretty cool that way
[13:16]<Quantos> She knows the way I think, that's kind of scary actually
[13:16]<@BC_Programming> I meant to imply that statement was talking about her "she's not the best but does a great job none the less"
[13:17]<Quantos> LOL
[13:17]<Quantos> I get it now
[13:17]<Quantos> I'm just a li'l slow today
[13:19] * jamer (uid12136@mib-DEE87C23.irccloud.com) has joined #glitchpc
[13:28]<@BC_Programming> nothing like using bitwise operators
[13:28]<@BC_Programming> I'm sure this will confuse somebody in the future
[13:28]<@BC_Programming> return !(Object.ReferenceEquals(OpA, null) ^ Object.ReferenceEquals(OpB, null));
[13:29]<jamer> Lol
[13:30]<@BC_Programming> they might even need to look up wtf a ^ operator does
[13:32]<jamer> Lostcoast and i may have come to an understanding ..
[13:32]<Quantos> Oh jamer?
[13:34]<jamer> Quantos well i talked to him last night and all .. Hes always in a bad mood when business isnt going well (buys and sells parts) but if hes got people buyig parts and such hes happy
[13:34]<Quantos> Oh yeah, too true
[13:35]<jamer> Also with this im gonna buy a phenom II 550 black edition from him
[13:36]<Quantos> Nice
[13:36]<Quantos> What kind of price?
[13:36]<jamer> 40 with heatsink
[13:36]<Quantos> That's pretty good
[13:37]<@BC_Programming> Oh yeah well I'm getting an i7!
[13:37]<jamer> Its a 4 core locked at dual core
[13:38]<Quantos> The phenom? Really?
[13:38]<Quantos> I don't remember hearing that
[13:38]<Quantos> Nice BC, which one?
[13:38]<jamer> Yeah lol
[13:38]<@BC_Programming> 4770K
[13:39]<@BC_Programming> re the locked cores that's actually fairly common
[13:39]<@BC_Programming> for example going back to the 486, intel released a lower cost 486SX that was marketed as not having a coprocessor, but in reality it was a 486DX that just had the coprocessor disabled
[13:40]<Quantos> Yeah, I know, I had an SX, couldn't believe the diff between it an my DX
[13:40]<Quantos> I finally picked up a co pro for it
[13:41]<jamer> I cant believe the mta study guide ... 54 pages long
[13:42]<@BC_Programming> its' cheaper for Intel and AMD to just disable cores and sell the CPUs cheaper than it is for them to design a new processor die, kind of ironic in a way
[13:42]<Quantos> yeah, it makes sense though BC
[13:43]<jamer> Its a 3.1 ghz stock chip :D
[13:43]<@BC_Programming> of course that would also include CPUs that have failed or broken cores, they just disable them and add it to the low-end pile. That is one danger of unlocking cores, since one of the disabled cores could have a short, and unlocking it could destroy the motherboard and CPU
[13:44]<jamer> BC_Programming yeah
[13:44]<Quantos> Yeah, it's like clock speeds, they just categorize them by what speed is stable
[13:44]<@BC_Programming> and if they have lots of high-rated chips they just toss them onto the other pile
[13:45]<Quantos> Yeap
[14:12]<@BC_Programming> hmm 12 instances of Visual Studio... Maybe the 16GB in the new build will in fact get used
[14:12]<Quantos> You run a fair number of VM's too right?
[14:13]<@BC_Programming> not all the time
[14:13]<@BC_Programming> I usually close them if I'm not fiddling around with them
[14:14]<Quantos> I wonder if 32 might be better for you
[14:16]<@BC_Programming> well that's why I got the 16GB as two 8GB sticks
[14:17]<@BC_Programming> that way I can buy two more and up it to 32GB without replacing them entirely as I would have if I got 16GB as 4 4GB sticks
[14:18]<Quantos> yeah, good call mang
[14:18]<Quantos> What does that board support in total?
[14:18]<@BC_Programming> that's emperor mang to you
[14:19]<@BC_Programming> 32GB is the max if I recall
[14:19]<Quantos> Hehehe, okay emperor
[14:19]<@BC_Programming> if it supported 64GB I doubt I'd ever got that high because of the having to replace it all thing
[14:19]<Quantos> I couldn't remember if it was 32 or 64
[14:20]<@BC_Programming> learned that lesson with this build, 8GB as 4 2GB sticks, upgrading to 16GB meant buying 4 new 4GB sticks to completely replace the ones I have which is rather pricey now since it's DDR2
[14:20]<+camerongray> I only have 8gb :P
[14:21]<@BC_Programming> remember when 32MB was considered gobs of RAM?
[14:21]<+camerongray> Will probably get 16 though - I also have 2x4gb sticks so can just get another parir
[14:21]<+camerongray> pair*
[14:21]<+camerongray> BC_Programming: Yep
[14:21]<+camerongray> I remember when I got 256mb RAM - That was mindblowing
[14:22]<Quantos> I had 32 MB with a mach 64 on a P133, it was considered an absolute monster
[14:22]<+camerongray> CompSoc are having another games night at uni - Need to fill my old machines up with retro games and take them over
[14:22]<+camerongray> The XT will of course be doing Zork again but this year I'll also take the IBM PS/1 with stuff like Lemmings
[14:25]<Quantos> Cool Cam
[14:26]<@BC_Programming> Megaman
[14:27]<Quantos> Mech Warrior
[14:28]<Quantos> Need for Speed - Hot Pursuit
[14:28]<Quantos> Wolfenstein
[14:28]<+camerongray> Oh yeah
[14:29]<+camerongray> I'll load it up with a bunch of stuff
[14:29]<+camerongray> As long as it runs under Windows 3.1/DOS on a 486SX with 4mb RAM
[14:30]<Quantos> I remember autoexec and config, they were always fun for games memory
[14:30]<Quantos> I don't think mech warrior and nfs will run on an sx
[14:31]<+camerongray> Ahh
[14:31]<Quantos> I seem to remember them needing a p90, if I remember correctly
[14:32]<+camerongray> Ahh - Don't have any old stuff that new :P
[14:32]<Quantos> LOL
[14:33]<+camerongray> 8088, 486SX, 486SLC, 486DX2 (In the upgrade slot with a 486SX onboard) and another 486DX2 in a ThinkPad 755C
[14:33]<+camerongray> Oh, and a 286 but it's dead and in bits in a box
[14:34]<Quantos> I had a 286
[14:34]<+camerongray> NIce
[14:34]<+camerongray> The first PC I used and later had myself was that 486DX2 but with the SX onboard
[14:34]<+camerongray> When I first used it it had the SX and 4mb RAM but my granny later used it and got it upgraded, then gave it to me
[14:35]<+camerongray> And I still have it :D
[14:35]<Quantos> Yeah, my 486 started out life as an SX, then I picked up a co-pro for it
[14:35]<+camerongray> Yeah
[14:35]<+camerongray> Dropped that machine a couple of weeks ago - Thought it was dead, was so upset
[14:35]<+camerongray> Fixed it :D
[14:35]<Quantos> You're pretty graceful eh?
[14:35]<+camerongray> haha - I was working on it and it sort of fell over
[14:35]<Quantos> If it's not your toes then your dropping them
[14:36]<Quantos> Yeah, my 486SX was an AST Bravo
[14:36]<+camerongray> The DX2 had fallen out the socket and bent half the pins, was able to bend them back with tweezers but it still wouldn't show anything on the sreen - Turns out that wheras now sockets are Zero Insertion Force, this was "Lots of Insertion Force"
[14:37]<+camerongray> So after shoving it in - It works fine
[14:37]<Quantos> Yeah, it's been a while since I've seen a LIF socket
[14:37]<@BC_Programming> on my 286 I moved jumpers around randomly
[14:37]<Quantos> LIF actually means Low Insertion Force though
[14:37]<+camerongray> All that doesn't is the CD-ROM but I thin that's a sound card issue - The drive connects to the card but no matter what dirive I connect, the tray won't open with the regular button
[14:38]<+camerongray> The card and drive aren't original though so not a massive deal
[14:38]<@BC_Programming> I have no idea what the jumper was for but one jumper I moved caused the system to not power on and all that happened was a nearby resistor smoked
[14:38]<+camerongray> haha
[14:38]<+camerongray> Mine was an Ambra Sprinta
[14:38]<@BC_Programming> when I put it back it still worked fine though
[14:38]<+camerongray> http://ipenburg.home.xs4all.nl/dds/sprinta.htm
[14:39]<Quantos> Remember when ODD started at $300?
[14:39]<@BC_Programming> I changed the voltage to 240v on the brilliant premise that more voltage means more speed
[14:39]<+camerongray> Haha
