[07:50]<+camerongray> hey jacky
[07:50]<@jacky> camerongray: Hello
[07:54]<@BC_Programming> I do find it strange how all these decisions on how to proceed need to be fielded to the Engineering mailing list
[07:55]<@BC_Programming> I mean come on that's an unnecessary delay... we had two choices for how to implement them- being global configs
[07:56]<@BC_Programming> instead of sitting on my ass waiting for everybody else to weigh the pros and cons I sat on my ass and wrote them both... There. Now we can ignore implementation in weighing them together
[07:57]<@BC_Programming> that seems kinda weird though, "we want X in Y" here everybody else is thinking about the best way to add X into Y, weighing those methods... and there I am just adding X to Y because dammit you guys are just avoiding doing this anyway
[07:57]<@BC_Programming> ALSO Hello everybody haha
[08:07]<+camerongray> lol
[08:07]<+camerongray> New monitors arrive today :D
[08:08]<+camerongray> Hoping they include DVI leads - Just realised they are so high res they need Dual Link but both my cables are single
[08:18]<@jacky> be back later

[12:43]<+camerongray> hey Calum
[12:44]<@Calum> hey camerongray
[12:44]<@BC_Programming> Well I know when I'm not wanted
[12:44]<@Calum> hey BBC Programmer
[12:44]<@Calum> ;)
[12:44]<+camerongray> haha
[12:45]<+camerongray> These monitors are amazing!
[12:45]<@Calum> I know right!
[12:45]<@Calum> I really wish I had the space for two
[12:45]<+camerongray> And I can run games at full res on them fine (Something I was a bit worried about due to my card)
[12:45]<@BC_Programming> can I borrow them? I promise I'll return them
[12:45]<+camerongray> haha!
[12:46]<@BC_Programming> oh yes games, because you run only game servers right? :P
[12:46]<+camerongray> But then I got distracted, fogot about my friend's halloween party and now we are frantically working out what I can dress up as
[12:46]<+camerongray> "Myself" wasn't accepted
[12:46]<@Calum> a monitor?
[12:46]<+camerongray> lol
[12:46]<@BC_Programming> Sexy Ernie
[12:46]<+camerongray> We are currently on "Tellytubby" where I selotape a tablet to myself and stick an spare WiFi antenna on my head
[13:05]<@Calum> wow, Steam Halloween sale looks good
[13:06]<+camerongray> I'm just looking for a game to test this :P
[13:06]<+camerongray> Just watched a 4k video, my mind was blown
[13:06]<@Calum> you don't have 4k resolution
[13:06]<+camerongray> This is actually a great res for me - Chrome and my IDE fit perfectly side by side
[13:06]<@Calum> quad HD
[13:07]<+camerongray> Yeah - Just getting something higher than 1080p
[13:07]<+camerongray> I wonder if something native would look even better
[13:07]<@Calum> it is pretty awesome, to know that you have 4x the resolution of standard HD heh
[13:09]<@BC_Programming> So sleepy, people discussing database reports isn't helping either
[13:09]<+camerongray> Yeah
[13:09]<+camerongray> My TV is just 720
[13:12]<@Calum> well, the good thing is that out of the games that looked interesting from the sale I already own about 1/2 of them
[13:15]<@Calum> ah, Steam, you nearly got me....not showing me that I own the games in the bundle I was about to buy until I checked them individually
[13:15]<@Calum> I wonder how that would've worked if I'd bought the bundle, hmm
[13:16]<@BC_Programming> Time for Lunch. Naturally as a Programmer I am obliged to get Pizza
[13:16]<@Calum> heh
[13:19]<@Calum> hm any ideas on where to get a shedload of cheap 2.5" HDDs?
[13:20]<@BC_Programming> no idea
[13:20]<@BC_Programming> if the size isn't important sometimes those sites that sell old stock might work. Though come to think of it I've never actually seen one of these sites, only heard of them
[13:21]<@Calum> yeah I could try a few IT recycling places, but they don't tend to sell little things like that really cheap, guess the time/cost of testing them isn't really worth it
[13:21]<@Calum> might have to just get a job lot on EBay
[13:22]<@BC_Programming> that works too
[13:22]<@Calum> I have like 20 laptops sitting here, and like 1 has a HDD
[13:23]<@BC_Programming> haha thus your need of HDDs
[13:23]<@Calum> yep lol, none of them have RAM, some are missing optical drives and covers and things, and some are beyond repair
[13:24]<@Calum> once I find my universal charger I'll commence testing them, I have a big bag of laptop DDR2 from ages ago I can use to test them, but even if only some work, I need HDDs
[13:24]<fileman> where are the laptops from, given their condition?
[13:25]<@Calum> I bought 7 off a guy I vaguely know, for a really good deal - all of those at least POST. When my gf's dad went to collect them for me as the guy was local to him, he gave him way more than I actually paid for
[13:25]<@Calum> just because he wanted rid of them all
[13:25]<@Calum> my gf's dad didn;t argue, just took them all, and now here I am, sitting on a throne made of old possibly broken laptops hah
[13:27]<@Calum> some of them aren't too bad spec actually, none are really ancient
[13:27]<@Calum> I think the worst are Pentium M which isn't horrible, there aren't any ancient Athlons or P4s or anything
[13:28]<fileman> you can setup a home computer cluster
[13:28]<fileman> dunno why
[13:28]<fileman> but that sound like fun
[13:29]<@Calum> hehe
[13:31]<@Calum> oh I take that back, I have an ancient one here
[13:31]<@Calum> made in Scotland, nice
[13:31]<+camerongray> ThinkPAd?
[13:31]<@Calum> I knew you'd chime in :P yeah, 600E
[13:31]<@BC_Programming> Scotland is clearly one of the words he has his client notify for
[13:32]<@Calum> haha
[13:32]<@Calum> ok there are some older ones in the bottom of the bag, a few P4s and things...ah well
[13:33]<+camerongray> lol
[13:33]<+camerongray> Yeah, they used to make ThinkPads here
[13:33]<@Calum> are old Thinkpads still worth anything?
[13:34]<@BC_Programming> good question
[13:34]<+camerongray> Not loads at the moment (Except for the REALLY old ones) but they may go up in the future
[13:34]<@Calum> so I should keep it as an investment?
[13:35]<@Calum> does PII count as really old?
[13:35]<fileman> yep, it can become a collectible in a few years i think
[13:35]<@Calum> this one smells of something, reminds me of something....can't think what
[13:36] * KindOne (KindOne@mib-DF6CD72B.dynamic.ip.windstream.net) Quit (Ping timeout)
[13:36]<+camerongray> haha
[13:38]<@Calum> ok so I have 14 laptops in total, for £65
[13:39]<@Calum> granted one is in pieces and another is smahed
[13:39]<@Calum> *smashed
[13:39]<@Calum> and 4 or 5 are really ancient
[13:39] * KindOne (KindOne@mib-D5DDCF58.dynamic.ip.windstream.net) has joined #glitchpc
[13:39]<@Calum> but that's not too bad I guess, out of the rest 3 or 4 are relatively new, and there's a little netbook as well
[13:40]<fileman> what's the netbook?
[13:40]<@Calum> nothing amazing, Samsung N150
[13:40]<@BC_Programming> http://imgur.com/g9vA41Y
[13:41]<+camerongray> haha
[13:45]<@BC_Programming> I had somebody ask how I can eat pizza all the time
[13:45]<@BC_Programming> and I said that I typically place it in my mouth, chew, and then swallow, repeating until the pizza is gone
[13:49]<+camerongray> My friends have decided my halloween outfit - "The Internet"
[13:49]<+camerongray> i.e. wrap myself in network gear
[13:49]<@BC_Programming> that works
[13:50]<@Calum> BC_Programming: that's how I normally eat it, too
[13:51]<@Calum> camerongray: nice hah
[13:51]<+camerongray> I knew taking all those ethernet cables from the lab labeled "Free" was a good idea
[13:53]<@Calum> heh yeah
[13:53]<@Calum> we were talking about hanging yourself with ethernet cables today
[13:53]<+camerongray> lol
[13:53]<@Calum> to escape our manager who is currently the bane of our lives
[13:55]<jamer> My lab we need to add in more wiring 60 desktops instead of 30 o. O
[13:57]<@BC_Programming> I'm one of those people that seems able to grow a reasonably thick beard, whereas lotso of people have it come in all patchy
[13:58]<@BC_Programming> on the other hand, though, I don't know why anybody would want one
[13:58]<@BC_Programming> "yes, please, make my chin perpetually itchy"
[14:00]<@Calum> why is it that people who can grow beards don't want them?
[14:00]<@Calum> it takes me about 6 months to grow anything close to a respectable bear, well more of a goatee
[14:00]<@BC_Programming> I have no idea...
[14:00]<@Calum> gift me with your hair growing powers
[14:01]<@Calum> I demand it
[14:01]<@BC_Programming> seriously within a week I look like a bushman
[14:01]<@Calum> the sysadmin at work is like that, along with my old manager at my old job
[14:01]<@Calum> makes me feel inadequate :(
[14:02]<@Calum> someone asked me if I was getting an early start for Movember, I did a sad face and said I'd been growing it since about May
[14:04]<@BC_Programming> hah
[14:06]<jamer> My labs back room makes me wonder if someone didnt rob a server warehouse.. I foubd more servers
[14:06]<@Calum> heh
[14:07]<@Calum> oh my lol....www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1752315
[14:08]<@BC_Programming> bahaha
[14:08]<@BC_Programming> "they told me to leave this forum and never return"
[14:08]<@Calum> perhaps I should take that attitude more often
[14:08]<jamer> Our back room has 2 eserver blade centers filled with blades, a bunch of u2 rackmounted stuff and like 5-6 tower style servers
[14:09]<@Calum> jamer: can I "borrow" some? ;)
[14:09]<jamer> Which things XD
[14:09]<@Calum> all of them
[14:09]<jamer> Lol good luck
[14:09]<@Calum> hehe
[14:11]<jamer> The rackmount is all duall cpu xeons and the blade servers have 2-4 cpus each
[14:11]<@Calum> I've always wanted a blade server
[14:11]<@Calum> just because it sounds awesome
[14:11]<jamer> Need 240 volt wiring
[14:12]<@Calum> in the Uk that's standard :)
[14:12]<jamer> Not here XD
[14:12]<@BC_Programming> only for Dryers
[14:12]<@BC_Programming> it's like, a special dryer plug... whyyy
[14:13]<jamer> -.- shaped
[14:13]<@BC_Programming> What about a Dryer makes it need 240 volts? What special powers does it have
[14:13]<@Calum> indeed, I always like how in say PSU reviews they'll give the efficiency, and then say "well, it would be more efficient on a 240V supply, but WHO THE EHCK HAS ONE OF THOSE? They're for CRAAAZY people or something"
[14:13]<@Calum> is it not for efficiency, because I assume dryers use a lot of power?
[14:13]<@BC_Programming> hahaha
[14:14]<@BC_Programming> well yeah but if dryers, why not washers/ovens/etc
[14:14]<@BC_Programming> I just wonder, what the logic behind it is
[14:14]<@BC_Programming> "let's have this special plug for a single appliance"
[14:14]<@Calum> yeah I guess, pretty weird
[14:14]<@Calum> are dryers like a standard thing there, like everyone has them?
[14:15]<@BC_Programming> they would be in most houses
[14:15]<@Calum> gotcha...not so much here, at least not the people that I know. Not like they;re super rare, but not as common as say a washing machine
[14:17]<@BC_Programming> my keyboard cleared customs yesterday apparently
[14:17]<@Calum> ah what did you get?
[14:17]<@BC_Programming> Unicomp Ultra Classic
[14:17]<@BC_Programming> was going to get something from wasdkeyboards... but their website pissed me off
[14:18]<@Calum> I bet Cameron just about fainted right? lol
[14:18]<@BC_Programming> scotland
[14:18]<@BC_Programming> just testing
[14:18]<@Calum> haha
[14:18]<@Calum> haggis
[14:18]<@Calum> IBM
[14:19]<@Calum> buckling spring
[14:19]<@Calum> maybe he fell off his chair with all the excitement
[14:19] * mib_p4fb0a (Mibbit@mib-C84FA41.pool.ukrtel.net) has joined #glitchpc
[14:19]<@BC_Programming> I think I posted it yesterday, but somebody asked what a Windows Key on a broken hard drive looked like
[14:20]<@BC_Programming> http://bc-programming.com/misc/windowskeyonnotbootingdrive.jpg
[14:20]<@Calum> haha
[14:20]<@BC_Programming> I couldn't help myself...
[14:20] * mib_p4fb0a (Mibbit@mib-C84FA41.pool.ukrtel.net) has left #glitchpc
[14:21]<@Calum> that was my first thought too actually
[14:21]<@Calum> were they asking how to get the product key or something?
[14:21] * Zuwer (Mibbit@mib-9196E61D.jetstream.xtra.co.nz) has joined #glitchpc
[14:21]<@BC_Programming> yeah
[14:22]<@BC_Programming> but the way they phrased it... I simply had to do it
[14:22]<@Calum> heh yeah
[14:22]<@Calum> nice work
[14:25]<+camerongray> Costume done :P
[14:25]<+camerongray> But now I need food and I can't go to get any like this
[14:26]<@BC_Programming> you could put a picture of a sorted list of food above your head
[14:26]<+camerongray> haha
[14:26]<@BC_Programming> say your dressed as "ordered food over the internet"
[14:27]<+camerongray> hahaha!
[14:27]<+camerongray> Oh - I could stick an antenna on my head
[14:43]<Immental1200> You should all
[14:43]<Immental1200> Be very jealous
[14:43]<Immental1200> http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3068276470
[14:43]<+camerongray> lol
[14:43]<+camerongray> My uni connection is better :P
[14:43]<Immental1200> That's Trowbridge College... supposedly Bath Uni has a better connection
[14:43]<+camerongray> 100 up and down on one of the best internet connections in the world :P
[14:44]<Immental1200> I tried it at peak times, with like 5 ISOs downloading and VOIP plus more on the network in the office in Bath... it got 65 / 70 down, 15 up
[14:45]<Immental1200> Unfortunately we've only got 100mb network in Bath... well, 100Mb to the main site with the routers.
[14:45]<@BC_Programming> I have half that
[14:45]<Immental1200> Like ... office is gigabit ... inside the building is 100mb ... and from the building to the other building is 10 gigabit or faster fibre
[14:45]<@BC_Programming> 9ms 26.98mbps dl 6.57mbps up
[14:45]<Immental1200> So we're limited by the building
[14:46]<@BC_Programming> heh Speedtest adverts chrome
[14:46]<@BC_Programming> Using Opera for the very reason that chrome was becoming unusably slow, haha
[14:47]<@Calum> dear Chrome: die. Regards, me.
[14:47]<fileman> is it uncommon to have a 100mbit/s?
[14:47]<Immental1200> No
[14:47]<Immental1200> Quite common
[14:48]<Immental1200> Unfortunately the building had a brand new network done like 5 years ago, and the upgrade cycle isn't due till next year at the earliest.
[14:48]<Immental1200> So it was all top-spec 5 years ago.
[14:48]<@BC_Programming> I've noticed that browsers do perfectly fine- up until flash
[14:49]<Immental1200> Yes.
[14:49]<Immental1200> Because Adobe have started to kill it
[14:49]<@BC_Programming> And it's funny because All the browsers are trying to add these plugin containers, or use separate processes, all because Flash is so buggy and crap
[14:49]<@Calum> my install of Firefox is pretty messed up at home, keeps creeping up to 1-1.5GB of RAM...do not want. I think that is actually Flash-related, too
[14:49]<@Calum> FLash is pretty awful
[14:49]<@Calum> so awful, I can't even type it properly, heh
[14:50]<fileman> hmm i do experience troubles with fullscreen flash
[14:50]<fileman> but in its ordinary mode, it works pretty well
[14:50]<fileman> firefox @ linux x86_64
[14:50]<@BC_Programming> Calum: possibly due to flash, I use Firefox and disable Flash completely
[14:50]<Immental1200> Anyone had issues with Chrome and YouTube lately
[14:51]<Immental1200> IE FullScreen / Enlarged view, makes the window shrink
[14:51]<Immental1200> But button placement is still clickable right in the corner
[14:51]<Immental1200> Also happens on BBC iPlayer for me
[14:51]<@BC_Programming> Immental1200: yes, that is the only thing I used chrome for for a while, it starts to hang and lose the video stream and stuff so I've been using Opera instead
[14:51]<@Calum> BC_Programming: I think it is, I haven't traced it completely because it;s not a huge issue as this laptop will be formatted soon anyway...I use the same setup at work with no issues but obviously don't use FLash much there
[14:51]<Immental1200> I've never had an issue with the stream dying
[14:51]<Immental1200> Just the sizing
[14:52]<Immental1200> Stream is always totally stable till my connection breaks it
[14:52]<@BC_Programming> Calum: re mem usage, I have it disabled and FF has been running for who knows how long here- have ~35 tabs open, 721MB Working Set
[14:53]<Immental1200> I want to disable Flash in Chrome and see what happens...
[14:53]<@BC_Programming> Of course while Firefox is using 720MB of Memory, Microsoft Visual Studio 2013 is using 44MB
[14:54]<Immental1200> https://www.dropbox.com/s/es5120pf457qiur/2013-10-30%2020_54_09-Task%20Manager.png
[14:54]<@BC_Programming> I've always hated how Chrome uses separated processes per tab
[14:55]<Immental1200> Facebook, Gmail, Ebuyer, WHMCS, Forum, IRC Cloud and three speedtest windows.
[14:55]<Immental1200> Are using that much...
[14:56]<fileman> what about cache, 'recently closed tabs' and extensions?
[14:57]<Immental1200> Let me see
[14:57]<Immental1200> Woah
[14:57]<Immental1200> Too many extensions
[14:57]<Immental1200> Alexa, Google Docs, Gmail Checker, LogMeIn (Don't even remember adding this), PageSpeed and WHOIS One Click
[14:58]<Immental1200> So... all of that can go apart from Gmail checker
