[12:14]<+camerongray> Calum: Let me know what you are getting rid of and I'll see if there's anything I need
[12:14]<@Calum> Had a long day today but I'm finally getting to it
[12:14]<+camerongray> Or that I don't need but still want :P
[12:15]<@Calum> Will do, I'm just finally getting to test my new board and CPUs, see what happens - then once that's done, I'm going to sort through everything
[12:15]<@Calum> I will have some Xeons going spare but they will not be free ;)
[12:15]<+camerongray> lol
[12:18] * jamer (androirc@mib-A6E9D87F.wireless.bright.net) Quit (Ping timeout)
[12:35]<@Calum> man why do cables never pack in neatly like they came out...
[12:52]<+camerongray> lol, yeah
[12:53]<+camerongray> Ebuyer seem to sell a lot of ethernet cables like this: http://www.ebuyer.com/171214-cablestogo-cat6-550mhz-snagless-patch-cable-red-1-5m-83447
[12:53]<+camerongray> Look good since the clips won't catch on other cables if they are in a pile
[12:53]<@Calum> ah, that's pretty cool
[12:54]<@Calum> bit expensive for a 3.5m cat5 cable though
[12:55]<+camerongray> Yeah, they have some cheaper ones though that have the same end]
[12:55] * Tux3 is now known as Tux2
[12:56]<@Calum> that's cool
[13:01]<@Calum> Think I just sold one of the Xeons
[13:01]<+camerongray> Nice, what model?
[13:01]<@Calum> L5640
[13:01]<@Calum> my mate is probably buying it
[13:01]<+camerongray> Sweet!
[13:01]<+camerongray> I have 2x L5420 in my server
[13:02]<@Calum> I have two of them going spare heh, the L5640s that is. I have two L5320 spare as well
[13:02]<+camerongray> lol
[13:03]<@Calum> and some dual cores...think they might be 5150s
[13:03]<+camerongray> Ahh nice, how do you get all these? :P
[13:03]<@Calum> Ebay lol
[13:03]<@Calum> I bought them cheap, because they were cheap, and for no other reason...then never built them into anything
[13:04]<+camerongray> lol
[13:04]<@Calum> you can get a board for them for about ?30, RAM for about ?8, then add a PSU and a case and you'd have a decent 8 core system
[13:04]<@Calum> not that I'm a salesman or anything heh
[13:04]<+camerongray> lol, Don't need, but want :P
[13:05]<+camerongray> Not sure what I'd do with it though
[13:05]<@Calum> heh, still going through stuff after sorting out the deal on the Xeon, give me time and I might be able to tempt you with things
[13:05]<+camerongray> lol, yeah
[13:06]<+camerongray> List them and how much you want and I'll see :P
[13:06]<@Calum> Heh, will do, a lot of it isn't worth anything so I'd just ask for postage on most
[13:07]<+camerongray> Sweet!
[13:07]<+camerongray> I'd love to run a server in the house but not sure about the power cost
[13:08]<+Tux2> camerongray: my server at my house costs me $60/year in electricity.
[13:08]<+camerongray> Hmm, what spec?
[13:12]<+camerongray> Tux2 ^^^
[13:15]<+Tux2> camerongray: dual cpu (not quite sure on the speed spec, but over 1GHz each), dual powersupply, 1 scsi drive, and a boat load of loud fans, not exactly economically built.
[13:15]<+camerongray> Ahh, nice"
[13:16]<+camerongray> Power is more expensive in the UK AFIK - Will need to calculate
[13:16]<@Calum> I just found a gearknob...not sure that was meant to be with watercooling tubing and a heatsink...
[13:16]<+camerongray> hahhaa, I'll take it! :P
[13:16]<@Calum> If it helps, I pay just under 16p a kwh in the daytime and just under 6p a kwh at night
[13:17]<+camerongray> Ahh, nice!
[13:17]<@Calum> No, it's mine! I remember where it's from now :)
[13:17]<+camerongray> Your car perhaps? :P
[13:17]<@Calum> Hah, well yeah
[13:17]<@Calum> I bought it ages ago
[13:17]<@Calum> Never got round to fitting it
[13:17]<@Calum> Mine has mysteriously lost its leather covering, not sure how
[13:18]<@Calum> My car has had a lot of former owners, some weird stuff is missing or has been added to it lol
[13:18]<+camerongray> lol, I don't even have a car :P
[13:31]<+camerongray> I'd quite like to get a decent but very power efficient server
[13:31]<+camerongray> Throw Windows on it and just use it for a bunch of different tasks
[13:32]<@Calum> you know what's good for that? Either an Atom board, or some oddball Xeons based on mobile CPUs, they were just called Xeon LV and there were only two models made, the code name was Sossaman
[13:33]<+camerongray> Thinking for the flat I would set up my printer centrally, could have it act as a print server for that so it could log who prints what, saves arguments when needing new toner/paper :P
[13:33]<+camerongray> Ahh, interesting on the Xeon
[13:33]<@Calum> They were pretty cool, nearly bought a bunch one time but never got around to it
[13:33]<@Calum> there's a fairly large thread on, I think, Xtremesystems about them
[13:33]<@Calum> I've compiled a list of stuff I'm getting rid of or would get rid of :P just tidying it up and I'll paste it
[13:34]<+camerongray> nice!
[13:34]<+camerongray> ooh, 40w
[13:34]<+camerongray> And ?9.99
[13:34]<@Calum> what's that?
[13:34]<+camerongray> The zeon
[13:34]<+camerongray> xeon*
[13:35]<+camerongray> Or ?6.25 for 2 :P
[13:35]<@Calum> link? :)
[13:35]<+camerongray> http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/S087-2-X-Intel-Xeon-Dual-Core-Processor-LV-5148-SLAG4-4M-2-33GHz-1333MHz-FSB-/281077775187?pt=UK_Computing_CPUs_Processors&hash=item41718a7b53
[13:36]<@Calum> ah that's a different one, they're alright too though
[13:36]<@Calum> I have similar
[13:36]<+camerongray> Ahh
[13:36]<@Calum> they have a model number, these are just called Xeon LV
[13:36]<+camerongray> ahh!
[13:36]<@Calum> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xeon#Pentium_M_.28Yonah.29_based_Xeon
[13:36]<@Calum> Tell a lie there were 4 models
[13:36]<+camerongray> *mind blown* 15w TDP!
[13:36]<@Calum> I know right
[13:37]<@Calum> they were just Pentium M CPUs for the desktop basically, but they were cool
[13:37]<+camerongray> Dual core though
[13:37]<@Calum> Also, there was a board made by Abit, that let you use socket 479 (Pentium M) CPUs on the desktop, that was sweet. Always wanted one, again almost bought one but didn't
[13:37]<@Calum> Ah truwe
[13:37]<@Calum> *true even
[13:38] * Tux3 (Tux2@mib-91CEC586.hlrn.qwest.net) has joined #glitchpc
[13:38]<@Calum> Only 32 bit, that's where I got confused, thought they were single core as well...was wondering why I was impressed hah, but yeah, dual core 15W is awesome
[13:38] * Tux2 (Tux2@mib-A7139C3.hlrn.qwest.net) Quit (NickServ (GHOST command used by Tux3))
[13:38]<+camerongray> Aww, can't find any :P
[13:38] * Tux3 is now known as Tux2
[13:38]<@Calum> http://mibpaste.com/RjBGES - here's the lsit of stuff I am throwing out
[13:38]<+camerongray> nice!
[13:39]<@Calum> http://mibpaste.com/N7LTRS - here's the stuff I would let go cheaply
[13:39]<+camerongray> sweet!
[13:40]<@Calum> if you need any info on any of the stuff just say so :) haven't descried it all fully because there's a lot of stuff heh
[13:40]<+camerongray> Yeah, looking
[13:41]<@Calum> that's maybe 1/3 of everything I have lying around, the rest I am either planning to use or may be used in the future
[13:41]<@Calum> Oh, I also have a HP Omnibook lying around
[13:42]<+camerongray> How much for the Atom board?
[13:42]<+camerongray> And what RAM does it take?
[13:43]<@Calum> Trying to remember how much I paid for it...it's a Gigabyte D525TUD if I remember rightly, takes DDR2
[13:44]<@Calum> I can't remember how much I paid for it, don't want to rip you off hah, not sure how much they're worth nowadays. I bought it on impulse, never used it. Could probably do it for say ?30 if that sounds reasonable? If not feel free to make another offer, I'm not looking to sting you on pricing
[13:45]<+camerongray> Yeah, that sounds good!
[13:45]<+camerongray> What DDR2 do you have>
[13:45]<@Calum> I think I just have the 1GB stick, the 2GB stick is ECC registered from my old Opteron system...let me check on the rband etc
[13:46]<@Calum> It's Kingston 667MHz
[13:46]<+camerongray> Ahh, that would be great!
[13:46]<+camerongray> Wouldn't need much RAM at first
[13:47]<@Calum> No worries, that's free anyway so it can go in with the board
[13:47]<+camerongray> sweet!
[13:47]<@Calum> I'll try and make time to test it as well just to make sure it works, I've never even powered it on
[13:47]<+camerongray> What colour and how much for the SATA DVD-RW?
[13:48]<@Calum> it's black, it's a decent LiteOn iHAS324, came out of my PC like last month when I dismantled it. Could do that for ?5
[13:49]<+camerongray> Cool
[13:49]<+camerongray> Can you tell I'm trying to build a small server here :P
[13:49]<@Calum> heh
[13:49]<@Calum> SSD interest you at all? ;)
[13:49]<+camerongray> lol, depends on the price :P
[13:50]<@Calum> It's a 64GB Crucial M4, bought it last week for ?35 so I'd have to ask for the same, they usually go for ?40-45
[13:50]<@Calum> thought I'd give it a shot heh
[13:50]<+camerongray> lol!
[13:51]<+camerongray> I really want this case :P http://linitx.com/product/cfi-a2060-miniitx-nasserver-case-2-hot-swap-bays/13404
[13:51]<@Calum> I have a 128GB M4 and a 160GB Intel right now
[13:51]<@Calum> that looks tasty
[13:51]<+camerongray> I have too many SSDs - 120gb + 240gb in my desktop, 250gb in my ThinkPad, 120gb in my MacBook and 60gb in my HTPC :P
[13:52]<@Calum> I quite like this, apart from it being Akasa - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-065-AK&groupid=2362&catid=2279
[13:52]<@Calum> hah, that's a lot of SSDs man
[13:52]<+camerongray> lol
[13:52]<@Calum> I have 3x32GB Samsung SLC SSDs here as well
[13:52]<@Calum> but two are in laptops, one is spare but I might find a use for it
[13:52]<+camerongray> I'd like a case that looks server-ish if that makes sense :P
[13:53]<@Calum> yeah, I love these as well but they're only for a specific board, they look fairly server-ish heh - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-530-LL&groupid=2362&catid=2279
[13:53]<+camerongray> oh yeah
[13:54]<+camerongray> Then comes the decision between Linux, UNIX or Windows :P
[13:54]<@Calum> Also have you looked at the Streacom cases? They're for the HTPC market but I think they could make decent servers too
[13:54]<@Calum> heh
[13:54]<+camerongray> Ahh, they look nice!
[13:55]<@Calum> some of them are fantastically expensive but the F1 and F7 are really nice
[13:56]<+camerongray> Any idea of power cost of running an atom machine 24/7?
[13:58]<@Calum> depends on the rest of the components but assuming you don't pack it with a million hard drives, you set them to spin down when not in use, and you use a half decent PSU, their peak system power, under full load, is sub 50w
[13:58]<@Calum> Idle about 35
[13:58]<@Calum> http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/pinetrail-atom-d525-nc98-525-lf,2716-7.html
[13:58]<+camerongray> cool!
[13:58]<@Calum> Basically about 20p a day at full load
[13:58]<@Calum> if my maths is right
[13:59]<+camerongray> Ahh, nice!
[13:59]<+camerongray> And it would be idling most of the time too
[13:59]<@Calum> 1000 watt hours in a kwh...draws 50w worst case...divide 1000 by 50 to get 20, so 20 hours full load is 1kwh...kwh is about 15p...sounds right
[14:00]<@Calum> idle would obviously be less, I'd say 15p a day basically
[14:00]<+camerongray> ahh, that's fine :P
[14:01]<@Calum> It'll probably be cheaper than that to be fair, I'd go with 15p a day as worst case
[14:01]<+camerongray> Yeah
[14:01]<+camerongray> Actually...
[14:01]<@Calum> for me, electricity is nearly 2/3 cheaper at night so that would reduce a lot
[14:01]<@Calum> if you're on economy 7 or similar, yours will do too
[14:02]<+camerongray> I currently pay ?3 or so a month for a VPS to backup my current server (The backup script doesn't work ATM :P) and another ?1.50 for the one I'm chatting to you now from
[14:02]<+camerongray> Would probably cost less if I moved them onto it!
[14:02]<@Calum> probably
[14:05] * KindOne (KindOne@mib-22EEB1D6.dynamic.ip.windstream.net) Quit (Ping timeout)
[14:08]<+camerongray> Hmm, I think I'll take the board and RAM
[14:08]<@Calum> If you need any cables or anything I can pack them up in the same box at no cost, I have a bag of other cables as well if there's anything you need
[14:09] * KindOne (KindOne@mib-855D69C6.dynamic.ip.windstream.net) has joined #glitchpc
[14:09]<@Calum> just spun around and noticed I have a perfectly sized box for the board as well, that's nice
[14:09]<+camerongray> Hmm
[14:09]<+camerongray> The Fan mates would be good
[14:09]<@Calum> no worries, one of them has some random black tape on it
[14:10]<+camerongray> Oh and the t2060 - Could use that in the laptops I'm working on
[14:10]<@Calum> I'll see if I can unpick it, it's just bundling the cables together - wasn't me that did it heh
[14:10]<+camerongray> lol, no problem
[14:10]<@Calum> sure, it should be working fine, believe I upgraded a laptop from that to something else
[14:10]<+camerongray> Ahh, cool
[14:11]<@Calum> if you'd like some 512MB DDR2 SODIMMs I can chuck a few of those in
[14:11]<+camerongray> Hmm, I suppse - Some machines still come with a single 512mb module so that could help
[14:12]<@Calum> always worth having some spare RAM anyway
[14:12]<@Calum> I'll throw in 3 or 4
[14:12]<+camerongray> sweet!
[14:12]<@Calum> CMOS batteries, need any of those?
[14:13]<+camerongray> Oh yeah :P
[14:13]<@Calum> I bought 20 or so a while ago because my car's remote fob takes them as well, which is handy, so I'll chuck one or two in
[14:13]<@Calum> can't tempt you with some cheap Xeons? ;)
[14:13]<+camerongray> ahh, cheers!
[14:14]<@Mulreay> Eurovision makes me want to pull my own ears and face off
[14:14]<@Calum> haha
[14:15]<+camerongray> Is it just me or does she look a bit drunk?
[14:15]<@Mulreay> Was thinking that as well
[14:15]<@Calum> I don't have a TV so I'll never know what I'm missing :)
[14:16]<+camerongray> lol!
[14:18]<+camerongray> Any PCI NICs?
[14:20]<+camerongray> Calum: That board might be DDR 3
[14:20]<@Calum> I don't think so, I know I did have one but it may have gone walkies, let me take another look. By the way the board is just the board and I/O shield, no box or other accessories
[14:20]<+camerongray> No problem
[14:20]<@Calum> You know what, you're quite right...no idea why I thought it was DDR2
[14:20]<@Calum> I've had a long day lol
[14:21]<+camerongray> lol, what do you have in the way of DDR3, and how much?
[14:21]<@Calum> let me see what DDR3 I have as well, if you need any?
[14:21]<@Calum> hah
[14:21]<@Calum> 2 ticks
[14:21]<+camerongray> Yeah, will need some
[14:21]<+camerongray> No idea why I don't have any spare RAM!
[14:23]<@Calum> I have a kit of 2x4GB, but not sure if the board supports 4GB DIMMs. I do have a 2GB stick of Patriot
[14:23]<@Calum> just trying to find those CMOS batteries as well
[14:23]<+camerongray> How much for the Patriot? That would be plenty
[14:25]<@Calum> Found the batteries, so that's good. Can't find a NIC, not sure where it went. I can throw in the Patriot for an extra ?5, it's decent stuff as well - Patriot Viper, came from a tri channel kit
[14:26]<@Calum> the other two sticks are in my parents' PC
[14:26]<+camerongray> Hmm, let me just figure out sizes, might be a bit tall :(
[14:26]<+camerongray> Would he heatspreader come off?
[14:27]<@Calum> it should do, I'll have a look and see how it's held on
[14:28]<@Calum> it's just adhesive so a bit of heat should loosen it and let you pry it off, or you could stick it in the freezer and the adhesive will go brittle and let you crack it off (not as bad as it sounds)
[14:28]<+camerongray> Ahh, nice!
[14:28]<+camerongray> And it can go back on?
[14:29]<@Calum> You can get thermal epoxy, or thermal tape, which should do the trick
[14:29]<+camerongray> sweet!
[14:29]<@Calum> heatspreader isn't necessary anyway, it's just for looks :) they do look sweet though heh
[14:29]<@Calum> nice black PCB as well
[14:29]<+camerongray> If I decide to get it, could you try getting it off it's easy, don't want to break it :P
[14:29]<@Calum> yeah, I could give it a go for you no bother
[14:29]<+camerongray> Actually, it MIGHT be okay
[14:30]<@Calum> from the bottom of the contacts to top of heatspreader, it's 2cm
[14:30]<@Calum> if that helps
[14:30]<@Calum> wait no, 2 inches
[14:30]<+camerongray> lol, was about to say :P
[14:31]<@Calum> it didn't sound right as I was typing it hah
[14:31]<@Calum> yeah it's 2 inches or 5cm tall
[14:31]<+camerongray> Cool
[14:31]<+camerongray> Would be tight
[14:31]<@Calum> so it's not ridiculously tall like say Corsair Vengeance
[14:32]<@Calum> I can have a go at removing the heatspreader if you want
[14:32]<+camerongray> http://linitx.com/product/cfi-a2060-miniitx-nasserver-case-2-hot-swap-bays/13404 - That's the case I'm considering
[14:32]<@Calum> Would be handy if they had a picture of it with a board installed
[14:33]<+camerongray> yeah
[14:33]<@Calum> It looks to me like there's a decent amount of clearance in there
[14:34]<+camerongray> Yeah, hopefully okay
[14:34]<+camerongray> I suppose if you took them off it's probably easier for me to put them on again
[14:34]<@Calum> it's almost exactly the same height as the I/O shield
[14:34]<@Calum> so looks to me like it would clear it fine...
[14:34]<+camerongray> Yeah, that's good
[14:35]<@Calum> but you're right, there's less danger in putting it back on if you wanted to, although it'd be fairly hard to damage it when removing it unless you went crazy
[14:35]<+camerongray> Yeah, leave it on
[14:35]<+camerongray> Should be fine
[14:35]<@Calum> RAM is very hard to snap, the only other danger is pulling the chips off the PCB but...that's also not that easy
[14:35]<@Calum> Cool
[14:36]<@Calum> Want me to just fire it up and check it's OK?
[14:36]<+camerongray> That would be great!
[14:36]<@Calum> I haven't put my test monitor away yet so I'll do that now, 2 minutes :)
[14:41]<@Calum> It's all good, nice BIOS setup actually
[14:41]<+camerongray> sweet!
[14:42]<@Calum> Just going to update the BIOS, it's on an older version and there are a few fixes listed
[14:43]<+camerongray> Cheers!
[14:44]<@Calum> No worries, BIOS updated and checked it boots again and it's all fine
[14:45]<+camerongray> Cool, so how much do I owe you including postage?
[14:46]<@Calum> So that's for the board and RAM, then free stuff - fan mates, CMOS batteries, DDR2 SODIMMs, and T2060...not missed anything?
[14:46]<@Calum> oh unless you wanted that DVDRW?
[14:47]<+camerongray> Hmm, should be fine without it
[14:47]<@Calum> cool, so it's ?35 all in, if that's cool
[14:47]<+camerongray> Ah ha! That IDE to SATA converter - I have some IDE drives here!
[14:47]<@Calum> cool, I'll grab that as well, it's still in its plastic packaging never used heh
[14:48]<+camerongray> lol
[14:48]<+camerongray> How much for the USB DVD drives actually?
[14:50]<@Calum> The top loading one is another LiteOn, that's new and sealed and it's USB powered. The slot loading one is unbranded and uses a USB connection for power as well as a USB for data. Could do either for ?10, they add weight so the postage goes up otherwise I'd do them cheaper
[14:50]<@Calum> the slot loading one is pretty cool, I disassembled one and put the drive in my laptop, not often you see a slot loading drive nowadays
[14:50]<@Calum> It's going to go into my PC when I build it, got a slimline adapter thingy
[14:50]<+camerongray> Yeah
[14:51]<+camerongray> Probably the slot loader
[14:51]<+camerongray> One less adapter to lose :P
[14:51]<@Calum> the slot loader uses two connectors
[14:52]<+camerongray> Ahh, like a dual headed cable?
[14:52]<@Calum> unusually, no, it's just one USB into a small tipped DC adapter
[14:52]<@Calum> then a normal US for data
[14:52]<@Calum> *USB
[14:52]<+camerongray> Ahh, hmm - That could be more losable :P
[14:53]<+camerongray> Is the tray load a standard looking adapter?
[14:53]<@Calum> heh, that was what I was thinking, it's an odd cable and I'm not sure if it's a standard easy to find one or not
[14:53]<@Calum> I think the tray one just takes power and data through a single USB, I'll check
[14:53]<+camerongray> Hmm
[14:53]<+camerongray> Ahh, cool
[14:54]<@Calum> Yeah the top load one just has one mini USB connector so it's nice and standardised
[14:54]<+camerongray> Ahh, top load :P - Go with that then
[14:54]<@Calum> I could unbox it and just put the drive and cable in the box with the board, and drop the price to ?8 if you like, as well
[14:55]<+camerongray> That would be ideal!
[14:55]<@Calum> here's the drive by the way - http://www.amazon.co.uk/LiteOn-ETAU108-02-Top-Load-External-DVDRW/dp/B002TPPD1U
[14:55]<@Calum> well, it's not the -02 version it's just an ETAU108 but it's identical as far as I can tell
[14:55]<+camerongray> Ahh, sweet!
[14:56]<@Calum> Hm, so apparently it's white, didn't know that...
[14:56]<@Calum> and it comes with the shortest cable I've ever seen hah, it's about 10cm long
[14:57]<+camerongray> lol!
[14:58]<@Calum> can't imagine using it with that cable. But at least it's standard and they're 99p on ebay heh
[14:58]<+camerongray> Yeah
[14:59]<@Calum> so if you still want it now you know it's white lol, it'd be ?43 all in
[14:59]<+camerongray> That's great!
[14:59]<+camerongray> Paypal Gift>
[15:00]<@Calum> That's cool with me, shall I PM you my email?
[15:00]<+camerongray> sure
[15:07]<+camerongray> We should have done this in CH and watch as they freak out about it :P
[15:07]<@Calum> Hah, can you imagine?
[15:07]<@Calum> We could always do it another time, and just make up some components
[15:07]<@Calum> I could "sell" you those L5640s
[15:07]<+camerongray> lol
[15:07]<@Calum> and some gear that no one there will know what it is
[15:08]<+camerongray> hahaha
[15:08]<@Calum> could be fun, we should do that heh
[15:08]<+camerongray> Someone mentioned Xeons there the other day :P
[15:08]<@Calum> interesting
[15:08]<+camerongray> Although it was a case of "I'm looking to set up a home server" db - "Oh, you want Xeons"
[15:08]<@Calum> ah
[15:10]<+camerongray> Because all home servers need Xeons :P
[15:10]<@Calum> Right, I better go for tonight, need to put this stuff back away/in the bin and get some sleep!
[15:10]<@Calum> specifically, they need L5640 Xeons, from me ;)
[15:10]<+camerongray> lol, yeah, cya
[15:10]<+camerongray> hahaha
[15:10]<@Calum> hehe
[15:10]<@Calum> catch you later
