[08:54]<+Craig> Hey Jacky
[08:54]<@jacky> Craig: Hello :)
[08:54]<+Craig> See you're first when you're the only one one
[08:55]<+Craig> on*
[08:55]<@BC_Programming> lol
[08:55]<+Craig> Oh there's BC, How goes it BC?
[08:55]<@BC_Programming> good
[08:55] * @jacky is relieved
[08:56]<@jacky> Hi ChanbotVI ... ... ... and BC
[08:56]<@BC_Programming> heh

[10:35]<Tux3> Heya BC_Programming, jacky, Craig, FusRoDah(Mulreay), and sonicrules1234
[10:35]<sonicrules1234> Ohai
[10:35]<+Craig> Hey Tux
[10:35]<@BC_Programming> HI Tux
[10:36]<@BC_Programming> Is it possible for us to get our stuff from the nostalgia world? I can't remember what we were doing with that
[10:36]<Tux3> Oh, bc, I'm going to need some snazzy artwork for the new site banner
[10:36]<@BC_Programming> Tux3: heh I was thinking that myself
[10:36]<Tux3> what do you mean bc? the Nostalgia world is loaded
[10:36]<@BC_Programming> yeah all the chests in my house are locked though :/
[10:36]<@BC_Programming> I think you locked them for me
[10:37]<Tux3> oh, lol, yeah
[10:37]<Tux3> I didn't want anyone stealing stuff out of them.
[10:37]<@jacky> Tux3: Hello
[10:38]<Tux3> So what do you think of the new website so far bc?
[10:38]<@BC_Programming> I like it :D I tried to go to the enjin site before and it was gone and I sorta scratched my head... then it made sense when I went to the normal address
[10:39]<@jacky> when you have a break in your conversation, I have computer question for the two of you
[10:39]<@BC_Programming> Fire Away Commander Jacky
[10:39]<@jacky> no rush
[10:39]<@BC_Programming> You were promoted
[10:39]<@jacky> har
[10:40]<@jacky> seriously.. I don't want to breakin... just don't want to have you two drift away, either
[10:40]<@BC_Programming> fair enuff
[10:41]<Tux3> lol, understood, what's up jacky?
[10:42]<@jacky> a couple weeks ago, friend had problem
[10:42]<+Craig> Man, Promethius is a stupid movie, I am glad I didn't see it in the theatre.
[10:42]<@jacky> old HP box, I think it was
[10:42]<@jacky> stuck on a boot up screen... from memory... choices were f9 for boot menu, f10 for bios, and one other
[10:42]<@jacky> he said it was stuck there
[10:42]<@jacky> all I did, when I got there, was switch it off... wait.. back on, and it booted normally
[10:42]<@jacky> just called me today
[10:42]<@jacky> doing it again
[10:43]<@BC_Programming> could be hard drive failing
[10:43]<@jacky> and this time... after 3 trys... still stuck
[10:43]<@BC_Programming> ... or failed
[10:43]<@jacky> but.. wouldn't it let him go to bios, even if drive is wacked?
[10:43]<@BC_Programming> depends... sometimes a borked logic board on a drive can freeze the POST
[10:43]<@jacky> ah
[10:44]<+Craig> Is it Sata or IDE?
[10:44]<Tux3> Yeah, either that or a bad cmos battery
[10:44]<@jacky> and, of course... his soon to be ex-wife left this machine... looks like something doctored up, as the case is old, but I think it had Vista on it.. cant' remember for sure... but I'll bet that he has no CD's or DVDs, and never did.
[10:45]<@jacky> some shop probably put Windows on it, somehow
[10:45]<@jacky> would cmos battery cause that??
[10:45]<@jacky> as for SATA or IDE... no idea.
[10:46]<@jacky> wouldn't a bad cmos battery still let you go on in? I seem to remember having a few like that
[10:46]<+Craig> If it was sata I would say disconnect the drive, then boot up with a Linux CD, then use Linux to read the drive after hot plugging it in.
[10:47]<@BC_Programming> wait a minute... I thought you said the message had f10 for BIOS?
[10:47]<@BC_Programming> Or did it graduate from that to actually not showing anything
[10:48]<@jacky> I'm trying to remember... from a couple weeks ago... and he was just on the phone telling me
[10:49]<@jacky> yes... f10 was "setup" I think he said
[10:49]<@jacky> f11 was something with networking....
[10:49]<Tux3> Network boot
[10:49]<@jacky> and I don't understand what you are asking: Or did it graduate from that to actually not showing anything
[10:49]<@jacky> can you explain?
[10:50]<@BC_Programming> you said " but.. wouldn't it let him go to bios, even if drive is wacked?" so I thought that not getting to the BIOS was an option... but F10 was that option :)
[10:50]<@jacky> right
[10:50]<@jacky> he is stuck
[10:50]<@BC_Programming> eg. I thought it had gone from showing the message before to not allowing anything... if it's still showing that then it could be CMOS battery
[10:50]<@jacky> neither of the "F" options does anything
[10:51]<@BC_Programming> jacky: probably a USB keyboard. Those don't work at boot
[10:51]<@jacky> isnt' that a function of a bios setting?
[10:51]<@jacky> "legacy" or soemthing like that?
[10:52]<@BC_Programming> not usually. That just let's Operating Systems use it like a PS/2 device, but it doesn't enable until after the POST finishes, as far as I recall
[10:52]<@jacky> oh. I thought that is exactly what it was for... to be able to make bios changes, if all you had was a USB keyboard
[10:52]<@jacky> wait.. THIS machien I'm on... has USB keyboard, and I can do bios changes...
[10:53]<@BC_Programming> it was at least originally so that you could run older Operating Systems that didn't understand USB by using a USB keyboard
[10:53]<@jacky> ok.. we are not even up to the OS though.
[10:53]<@jacky> heh
[10:53]<@BC_Programming> newer ones might work with it... all I know is I've never gotten a USB keyboard to work during POST with or without that option, might depend on the motherboard/BIOS itself
[10:53]<@jacky> so.. back to the battery
[10:54]<@jacky> are you saying that .. Yes.. it might be that?
[10:54]<@jacky> the battery, that is
[10:54]<@jacky> or more likely the hd
[10:54]<@BC_Programming> could be either, nothing really points to the HD, that was just my first thought for a boot failure
[10:55]<@BC_Programming> but if the CMOS battery dies the BIOS has a habit of flipping out due to a checksum mismatch and get's very cross
[10:55]<@jacky> it is more like a stuck before boot
[10:55]<@jacky> if it was you, would you just try it? go ahead and change the battery and see what happens?
[10:56]<Tux3> I'd start by pulling out all the adapter cards, and the cd and the floppy drive
[10:56]<@BC_Programming> well personally I'd probably try booting a OS disc of some sort
[10:56]<Tux3> then putting them in one by one until it freezes
[10:56]<@jacky> I doubt it has any cards
[10:56]<@jacky> I was going to do that last time... put in a bootable CD... but the thing started working, and never did
[10:57]<@jacky> can't remember... if there is another chance to get to bios, before this screen that he is stuck on... if not, then if it isnt' already set to boot to CD drive first... then what?
[10:57]<@BC_Programming> oooh you know what it might even be
[10:57]<@BC_Programming> a stick key on the keyboard
[10:57]<@BC_Programming> stuck*
[10:57]<@jacky> beat the sh*t out of the kb to loosen it?
[10:57]<@jacky> heh
[10:58]<@BC_Programming> basically we didn't narrow it down at all for you, did we :/
[10:58]<@jacky> not yet... but I'm still gathering ideas
[10:59]<@jacky> and I appreciate your time
[10:59]<@jacky> do comment though.. on the above: if it was you, would you just try it? go ahead and change the battery and see what happens?
[11:00]<@BC_Programming> well personally I'd probably check it with a multimeter and make sure it's ~3.5
[11:00]<@BC_Programming> but not having a multimeter handy replacing it would work as well
[11:00]<@BC_Programming> if it continues to do that then we've at least determined something that it isn't
[11:00]<@jacky> I've got an old cheapo DVM around here somewhere...

[11:08]<Tux3> Awesome! have you registered?
[11:08]<+camerongray> Oh no, will do
[11:09]<@BC_Programming> tux3: will a tweak to the old header do or did you want something new
[11:09]<@BC_Programming> because I can do that too
[11:09]<Tux3> Either will work
[11:09]<Tux3> That actually looks awesome!
[11:10]<@BC_Programming> yeah I thought it looked pretty good for the effort being like 20 seconds lol
[11:10]<Tux3> lol, yeah
[11:10]<Tux3> send the banner on over
[11:11]<@BC_Programming> will upload and give you URL
[11:12]<Tux3> awesome

[11:13]<@BC_Programming> it shows up with a white background but it's got alpha
[11:32]<@BC_Programming> tux3: I updated BCPixArt to work with the latest bukkit :D
[11:32]<Tux3> Go take a look bcq
[11:33]<Tux3> Awesome!
[11:33]<@BC_Programming> it was a bit easier than I expected, already pushed to github
[11:34]<@BC_Programming> hmmm maybe I should shorten that header so it lines up with the right edge
[11:42]<Tux3> lol, yeah

[11:52]<Tux3> Okay, just replaced it

[12:32]<@BC_Programming> hello cameron and jacky
[12:32]<@jacky> argggg!!
[12:32]<@jacky> <g>
[12:32]<@BC_Programming> :D
[12:32]<@BC_Programming> you know I did that on purpose :P
[12:32]<@jacky> no luck with bootable linux cds
[12:32]<camerongray_> lol, what's up?
[12:32]<@jacky> not a one of them would boot this computer
[12:33]<@BC_Programming> hmm
[12:33]<@jacky> all hung
[12:33]<@jacky> and
[12:33]<camerongray_> what spec is the PC?
[12:33]<@jacky> how to go about boot from a flash drive?
[12:33]<@jacky> define "spec"
[12:33]<camerongray_> CPU, RAM, Graphics .etc
[12:33]<@jacky> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128435 <<< that motherboard
[12:33]<@jacky> athonII 3GH
[12:34]<@jacky> 4G ram
[12:34]<camerongray_> Ahh, that shouldn't have problems booting CD
[12:34]<@BC_Programming> jacky: I'm left with, either the keyboard (stuck key) or motherboard or PSU issue
[12:34]<@jacky> BC_Programming: do you ever boot linux from a thumb drive
[12:34]<camerongray_> I di!
[12:34]<camerongray_> do*
[12:34]<@jacky> bc: I'm talking about MY computer now
[12:34]<@jacky> I haven't even been there, to my friends house, yet
[12:34]<camerongray_> http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ - This is what I use
[12:35]<camerongray_> You format the drive and run that
[12:35]<@BC_Programming> oh... so you couldn't boot a Linux ISO?
[12:35]<@jacky> correct. will not boot this machine. all hang
[12:35]<@jacky> this machine DOES have a bad hd in it
[12:35]<camerongray_> Can either pick an ISO from your HDD or pick one for it to download, will put it on the USB
[12:35]<@jacky> bios sits for a minute... then goes on
[12:35]<camerongray_> Tried without the drive connected? Linux could be trying to access it and failing
[12:36]<@jacky> no.. didn't take time to try to figure out which drive it is
[12:36]<@jacky> about usb thumb drive. I have 4 USB options in bios
[12:36]<@jacky> usb - fdd
[12:36]<@jacky> usb - zip
[12:36]<@jacky> usb - cdrom
[12:36]<@jacky> usb - hdd
[12:36]<@jacky>
[12:36]<@BC_Programming> for boot options?
[12:36]<camerongray_> You'll want the hdd one
[12:36]<@jacky> which one would you pick, if trying to boot usb?
[12:37]<@BC_Programming> for a flash probably usb-hdd
[12:37]<@jacky> I tried usb-hdd it blew right by it... nothing
[12:37]<@jacky> rats.
[12:37]<@jacky> sigh
[12:37]<@jacky> I wonder what I put on that usb stick?
[12:37]<@jacky> it has been a while
[12:37]<@jacky> heheeh
[12:37]<camerongray_> lol
[12:37]<@jacky> anybody recommend one?
[12:37]<camerongray_> Try unetbootin
[12:37]<@jacky> what's that?
[12:37]<@jacky> a linux distro?
[12:38]<camerongray_> A program to make bootable linux USB drives
[12:38]<camerongray_> http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/
[12:38]<@jacky> shouldn't it bootable, as is?
[12:38]<camerongray_> How did you make it?
[12:38]<@jacky> been too long
[12:38]<@jacky> probably d/ld, and followed directions
[12:38]<camerongray_> Ahh
[12:39]<@jacky> can you recommend a linux distro, that I can easily put on a usb stick, and have it be bootable?
[12:39]<camerongray_> Ubuntu would be my first choice
[12:39]<@jacky> that rings a bell
[12:39]<@jacky> what can I look at, on the usb stick, to tell us what is on it?
[12:40]<camerongray_> What do you mean?
[12:40]<camerongray_> Just open it in Windows Explorer
[12:40]<@jacky> and..
[12:40]<@BC_Programming> all I remember is there is usually a folder called "casper"...
[12:40]<camerongray_> Ahh, to see what distro?
[12:40]<@BC_Programming> if that is there it's probably a bootable distro
[12:40]<@BC_Programming> what it is though, I dunno, I had that same problem myself
[12:40]<@jacky> camerongray_: yes.
[12:40]<@BC_Programming> they all look the same
[12:40]<@jacky> and yes... is there a way to tell if it is bootable, just by looking at it?
[12:41]<@BC_Programming> (to me, I'm sure there is a way to tell the difference, I just don't know it)
[12:41]<@jacky> (there is a dir, named casper )
[12:42]<@jacky>
[12:42]<@jacky> well... can somebody give me a link, for ubuntu, for whatever I need to d/l, to make a bootable flash drive?
[12:42]<@jacky> let's be sure I get it right, this time....
[12:44]<@jacky>
[12:44]<@jacky> wait... I found this on my hd: ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-i386.iso
[12:44]<@jacky> and this: Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.0.9.exe
[12:44]<@BC_Programming> ahh
[12:44]<@jacky> must be left over from first time I tried this
[12:44]<@jacky> y'think?
[12:44]<@BC_Programming> if you used that, the flash drive probably has Ubuntu 12 on it then
[12:45]<@jacky> what's the trick, to get it try to boot from it then?
[12:45]<@jacky> it said boot error or something like that
[12:45]<@jacky> when I tried it, usb-hdd
[12:46]<@BC_Programming> usb-hdd would have to be first
[12:46]<@jacky> I did f12 got a menu, chose usb-hdd and hit it
[12:46]<@BC_Programming> hmm
[12:46]<@BC_Programming> I don't know them
[12:46]<@BC_Programming> then*
[12:46]<@BC_Programming> should have worked :/
[12:46]<@jacky> camerongray_: your thoughts?
[12:47]<@jacky> rats...
[12:47]<@jacky> he's fizzled out
[12:47]<@BC_Programming> seems so
[12:48]<@jacky> have you ever used that thing? : Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.0.9.exe
[12:48]<@BC_Programming> can't say I did no
[12:49]<@jacky> what do you use?
[12:49]<@jacky> maybe I should try something else...
[12:50]<@BC_Programming> last time I did it was with Mint 7, ages ago
[12:50]<@BC_Programming> can't remember what I used
[12:50]<@jacky> just by way of conversation: I have a Mint CD ... it took 5 min just to get to the Mint screen... and then it just stayed there for another 15 or so, until I got tired of it.
[12:51]<@jacky>
[12:51]<@jacky> so you created the bootable usb stick, using linux
[12:51]<@jacky> is that it?
[12:52]<@BC_Programming> "Mint screen"? what do you mean by that
[12:52]<@jacky> as I recall... a gray screen, with Linux Mint words on it
[12:52]<@jacky> with 4 dots below it
[12:52]<@jacky> they would slowly turn green
[12:52]<@jacky> in a scrolling fashion
[12:52]<@jacky> over and over and over
[12:53]<@BC_Programming> hmm... that isn't right
[12:53]<@jacky> what isn't right?
[12:53]<@jacky> the green dots??
[12:53]<@BC_Programming> no I mean it shouldn't hang there...
[12:53]<@BC_Programming> not that you are wrong :P
[12:53]<@jacky> Oh... I could be wrong... heheeh
[12:54]<@jacky> I just took it as the way that this version/distro decided to hang
[12:54]<@jacky> others hung differently
[12:54]<@jacky> rats... I just wanted to take one with me....
[12:54]<@BC_Programming> wasn't this the same PC (yours) that had issues from a thunderstorm? Am I remembering correctly?
[12:55]<@jacky> I had one that did, yes
[12:55]<@jacky> this is a different motherboard
[12:55]<@jacky> no problems with this one
[12:55]<@jacky> I wonder if the "hanging" can be that bad drive in there....
[12:55]<@BC_Programming> could very well be
[12:55]<@jacky> anyway... back to the flash drive version
[12:56]<@jacky> it just came up error, in the boot sequence
[12:56]<@jacky> I wonder if I should try that other thing camerongray_ mentioned
[12:56]<@jacky> unetbootin or whatever it was
[12:56]<@BC_Programming> worth a shot... shame he's not here to help since I've not used it
[12:57]<@jacky> ok
[12:57]<@jacky> oh
[12:57]<@jacky> what would you do with the flash drive that has linux on it now?
[12:57]<@jacky> to prepare it?
[12:57]<@BC_Programming> nothing... should have everything you need already
[12:58]<@jacky> I meant... to get rid of the installation that is already on there
[12:58]<@BC_Programming> oh
[12:58]<@jacky> should it be cleared off?
[12:58]<@BC_Programming> just format it
[12:58]<@jacky> fat32?
[12:58]<@jacky> or.. ?
[12:58]<@BC_Programming> wait... uhh... what exactly are you aiming for here
[12:59]<@BC_Programming> "to prepare" it for what?
[12:59]<@BC_Programming> should be fine to boot as it is, if that's what you want
[12:59]<@jacky> to install linux on it again, using camerongray_'s recommendation.. that unet-installer thing
[12:59]<@BC_Programming> ahh yeah just format... doesn't matter what file system
[12:59]<@BC_Programming> at least I don't think it does
[13:00]<@jacky> I thought it did... it is fat32 now
[13:00]<@jacky> oh.. .anothe question... why is that flash drive always "I" drive
[13:00]<@jacky> even if it is the only one inserted
[13:00]<@jacky> I'd think it would be the lowest available letter
[13:00]<@BC_Programming> it "remembers" what it was the first time it was inserted
[13:00]<@jacky> forever?
[13:01]<@BC_Programming> I'm not sure how it works, exactly
[13:01]<Tux3> You can change the drive letter in the device manager
[13:01]<@jacky> formatting it now.. fat32
[13:03]<@jacky> installing it now
[13:04]<@jacky> I'm glad I kept the .iso
[13:04]<@jacky> whew
[13:04]<@jacky> Avira popped up... something about blocking access to autorun.inf
[13:04]<@jacky> potential problem?
[13:05]<@BC_Programming> no
[13:05]<@jacky> ok..
[13:05]<@jacky> stick around
[13:05]<@jacky> am going to see if it will boot
[13:06]<@jacky>
[13:06]<@jacky> thanks, all
[13:06]<@jacky>

[14:28]<+camerongray> Not sure, probably not
[14:28]<WhooZat> ok
[14:28]<+camerongray> If it did it might have XChat or Pidgin
