[07:17]<+camerongray> hey jacky
[07:18]<@jacky> camerongray: Hello
[07:18]<+camerongray> bbl, going to try installing Windows on my PC again
[07:18]<+camerongray> It keeps fussing that it's not on the first drive
[07:18]<@jacky> isn't that a requirment, of Windows?
[07:19]<+camerongray> Yeah, I'll try to trick it by unplugging the other drives :P
[07:20]<+camerongray> Failing that I'll shout at it
[07:20]<@jacky> then what happens when you put them back in?
[07:20]<@jacky> won't the OS make them secondary drives?
[07:20]<@jacky> I guess that won't matter, unless you have some reason
[07:20]<@BC_Programming> I've never had a problem installing windows on drives other than the primary drive...
[07:20] * lucifer (lucifer@mib-2849CC3C.dsl.bright.net) has joined #glitchpc
[07:20]<+camerongray> I should be able to get it to boot, it's just because it tries to put the boot loader on the first drive and can't because it\s NTFS
[07:20]<+camerongray> it's not uNTFS*
[07:21]<+camerongray> NTFS* gah!
[07:21]<lucifer> Ouch
[07:21]<+camerongray> I'm getting a bit bored of OSX :(
[07:21]<lucifer> Lol
[07:21]<+camerongray> Not sure why
[07:22]<+camerongray> bbl - going to give it a go
[07:22] * camerongray (camerongra@3FDE0078.46F855F0.5B4C21C.IP) Quit (Quit: camerongray)
[07:22]<lucifer> I'm getting a 320gb hard drive for me giving them two 40gb's
[07:22]<@jacky> luck on you

[07:22]<@jacky> camerongray: that was quick
[07:22]<@jacky> how'd it go?
[07:22]<@jacky> hehehe
[07:22]<+camerongray> lol
[07:23]<+camerongray> Forgot that I was going to use the spare drives for linux :P
[07:23]<+camerongray> Need it for university
[07:23]<@jacky> that's the one to learn and master
[07:23]<lucifer> jacky the 320 is sata and the 2 40's are IDE
[07:23]<@jacky> you need linux for school?
[07:23]<@jacky> that's interesting
[07:23]<@jacky> lucifer: sounds too good to be true
[07:23]<+camerongray> School used WIndows
[07:24]<+camerongray> University use Linux
[07:24]<@jacky> they do?
[07:24]<@jacky> that's great
[07:24]<+camerongray> Well, in the informatics departments yes
[07:24]<@jacky> for everything? or just computer related classes
[07:24]<+camerongray> Just informatics (Computers/AI(
[07:24]<lucifer> jacky the guy needs the ide's for laptops he's working on
[07:25]<+camerongray> Most other places use Windows
[07:25]<@jacky> I'd have to look that new word up: informatics. heh
[07:25]<+camerongray> lol
[07:25]<@jacky> lucifer: check out the drive, first
[07:25]<lucifer> I am
[07:26]<+camerongray> Now I can't decide whether to install Linux or Windows
[07:26]<@jacky> camerongray: what are the considerations?
[07:26]<@BC_Programming> yeah some universities have decided to use software that is free and open source, as opposed to software that works... That isn't to say that free/Open Source software doesn't work, just that if you are looking for software, the first question should be "does it do what I need" not "can I waste hours making changes to this code to make it do what I want?"
[07:27]<+camerongray> Well, the machines are used more to develop rather than to use software
[07:27]<@jacky> so find free/open source that does what you need. :)
[07:27]<@jacky> your implication that free software doesn't work is not valid
[07:27]<+camerongray> lol
[07:27]<@BC_Programming> I didn't make that implication
[07:28]<@jacky> oh?
[07:28]<@BC_Programming> "That isn't to say that free/Open Source software doesn't work"
[07:28]<@jacky> " as opposed to software that works."
[07:28]<@jacky> nice try... there's a name for that sort of manuevering.. I cant' remember it
[07:28]<@jacky> hehehe
[07:28]<@BC_Programming> eg. they should be looking for software that works, not software that is open source. if they can get both, good on them
[07:28]<+camerongray> I'll put Windows on now, if it works I'll buy a better SSD for it and put Linux on the slow SSD
[07:29]<@jacky> slow SSD ?
[07:29]<@jacky> I thought there were all fast
[07:29]<+camerongray> Well, slower SSD :P
[07:29]<@jacky> oh... why not install both?
[07:29]<+camerongray> Only 60gb
[07:29]<@jacky> fill me in... how much does Win need now, and whatever distor of linux you'd use?
[07:30]<+camerongray> Not sure, 30gb for windows
[07:30]<+camerongray> Then take into account of Applications
[07:30]<+camerongray> Not enough for linux too
[07:30]<@jacky> no other drive to install them on?
[07:30]<+camerongray> I have a spare 1tb in the PC but that will be used as a storage drive for large files under windows
[07:30]<+camerongray> I have space for another couple of drives in the case
[07:31]<@jacky> uhh.... doesn't Applications qualify for that drive?
[07:31]<+camerongray> Well, they would load slower
[07:31]<+camerongray> I keep ones that I want to be fast on the SSD
[07:31]<@jacky> picky, picky
[07:31]<@jacky> heheh
[07:31]<+camerongray> lol
[07:32]<@jacky> well... install linux on the 1tb drive then, and just live with it being "slow"
[07:32]<+camerongray> For example, my browser and IRC client are on the SSD so they are fast but my video editing program that takes up a lot of space is on the HDD
[07:32]<+camerongray> SSDs are pretty cheap now
[07:32]<@jacky> buy 3 or 4 more then
[07:32]<@jacky> heh
[07:32]<lucifer> I'ld love to own an ssd and a 1 tb
[07:32]<+camerongray> lol
[07:32]<+camerongray> Sooooo worth it
[07:33]<+camerongray> My MBP boots in 10 seconds
[07:33]<@jacky> camerongray is spoiled
[07:33]<@jacky> what is MBP ?
[07:33]<+camerongray> MacBook Pro
[07:33]<+camerongray> I work for all my money :P
[07:33]<lucifer> jacky I can tell his is
[07:33]<@jacky> still spoiled... you don't want to use plain old drives anymore
[07:33]<@jacky> hehehe
[07:34]<+camerongray> hehehe
[07:34]<+camerongray> Once you get an SSD, you can;t use anything else
[07:34]<+camerongray> Just feels slow
[07:34]<@jacky> I understand. Win3.1 on this 486DX33 bugs me sometimes too
[07:34]<@jacky> >g<
[07:34]<lucifer> camerongray I get used to the slowerness
[07:35]<@jacky> "slowerness" new word!
[07:35]<+camerongray> lol, I have win 3.1 on a 486SX, even slower than your DX!
[07:35]<@jacky> that 486 is probably older than you!!
[07:35]<+camerongray> yep, 2 years older
[07:35]<@jacky> yeesh..
[07:35]<lucifer> I've got a laptop that is older than I am :D
[07:36]<lucifer> Satellite 115cs
[07:36]<+camerongray> I've got a computer older than BC!
[07:36]<@jacky> so you all don't remember your hobbiest friends using cassette tapes to load programs then, huh?
[07:36]<+camerongray> lol
[07:36]<@jacky> and a new fangled thingy... external device.... called a "disc drive" that was SUPER fast??
[07:37]<+camerongray> lol
[07:37]<+camerongray> http://www.ebuyer.com/309694-kingston-128gb-v200-ssd-sv200s37a-128g - Bargain! ?0.15 off!
[07:38]<@jacky> what is the life of these things?
[07:38]<+camerongray> Not sure, long time as long as you don\t defrag them
[07:38]<@jacky> ah
[07:38]<@jacky> oh.. change of topic?
[07:38]<lucifer> Lol defragging a ssd
[07:39]<@jacky> anybody here using Firefox?
[07:39]<+camerongray> Nah, I use it sometimes but not as a main browser
[07:39]<@BC_Programming> I am
[07:39]<@jacky> anybody using the newest ver? it is popping up, telling me to upgrade. Thought I'd ask....
[07:39]<lucifer> Colloquy ATM and I use chrome on my desktop
[07:39]<@BC_Programming> I think I'm using the latest
[07:39]<@jacky> BC_Programming: what ver number?
[07:39]<@BC_Programming> oh... maybe not, I'm on 12
[07:39]<+camerongray> I upgraded FF at work, not noticed a big difference
[07:40]<@jacky> BC_Programming: har
[07:40]<@BC_Programming> went to about and now it says it's downloading an update
[07:40]<@jacky> I'm on 13.something
[07:40]<@jacky> camerongray: mainly wanted to know if there were problems, but
[07:40]<@jacky> I can wait a few min, and see what BC says
[07:40]<@jacky> heh
[07:40]<+camerongray> lol
[07:40]<@jacky> BC_Programming: don't you just love that? when you check, it just does it.....
[07:41]<@BC_Programming> not what I'd call streamlined
[07:41]<@jacky> BC_Programming: and be very careful. FF is free software.... it might not work. <eg>
[07:41]<@jacky> streamlined?
[07:41]<@BC_Programming> the updating thing
[07:41]<@jacky> not following you. sorry
[07:41]<@BC_Programming> Chrome's is completely transparent, you don't even know
[07:41]<@jacky> oh. the process?
[07:42]<lucifer> Yeah
[07:42]<@jacky> I think I'd prefer to know, and be in control
[07:42]<@BC_Programming> that's true, unfortunately Firefox is in some weird limbo
[07:42]<lucifer> Our school uses chrome and the IT loves it
[07:42]<@jacky> although I think there is an option to fully automate it... can't remember for sure
[07:42]<@BC_Programming> where it sorta gives you control over updates... unless Mozilla decides to force you...
[07:42]<@jacky> heh
[07:43]<@jacky> "This won't hurt much .... did it?"
[07:43]<+camerongray> When I graduated (Couple of months ago) my school was still on IE6
[07:43]<@jacky> when I graduated, my school had electric lights.
[07:43]<lucifer> camerongray my school uses macs
[07:43]<@BC_Programming> ok updated... seems exactly the same as before
[07:43]<+camerongray> lol
[07:43]<@BC_Programming> which I guess is a good thing
[07:43]<@jacky> BC_Programming: Wow! I can't wait to get it then!!
[07:43]<@BC_Programming> lol
[07:44]<@BC_Programming> they can have that as there tagline
[07:44]<+camerongray> lol, I'd use FF if only it was faster
[07:44]<lucifer> We have firefox safari and chrome installed
[07:44]<@BC_Programming> "new Firefox 15: Exactly the same as before!"
[07:44]<+camerongray> hahaha!
[07:44]<@jacky> BC_Programming: sounds like a Microsoft ad
[07:44]<@jacky> hehe
[07:44]<+camerongray> I think I'll install Windows
[07:44]<+camerongray> Now, Windows 7 Pro or 8?
[07:44]<@jacky> so you can install FF ??!!??
[07:45]<+camerongray> lol
[07:45]<+camerongray> I don't want to be stuck in the past when 8 comes out
[07:45]<@jacky> camerongray: twiddle your thumbs, and wait for 9. maybe 10
[07:45]<+camerongray> But 8 sucks!
[07:45]<+camerongray> lol
[07:45]<@BC_Programming> on Mint 10 it insisted that FF 3.6 was the most up to date version
[07:45]<@jacky> why does 8 suck? is it the "every other one" thing that MS does?
[07:45]<@BC_Programming> don't know about Windows 8, but Visual Studio 2012 is pretty cool
[07:45]<lucifer> 8 is like the new vista
[07:46]<@jacky> what do they CLAIM about 8, that is new?
[07:46]<+camerongray> Everything!
[07:46]<+camerongray> Have you seen it>
[07:46]<@jacky> har
[07:46]<@jacky> no
[07:46]<@BC_Programming> metro... or... uh... "new style UI" or whatever it's called
[07:46]<+camerongray> http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/get-started <- Watch and wrap!
[07:47]<@BC_Programming> it would actually work pretty good for touchscreens IMO... and I think it still has the "standard" desktop too
[07:47]<@jacky> camerongray: what's to watch there?
[07:47]<+camerongray> It has the desktop yes
[07:47]<+camerongray> But no start menu
[07:47]<+camerongray> There's a video
[07:47]<@jacky> must be being blocked by script blocker then
[07:47]<lucifer> Its trying to beat google's os
[07:48]<+camerongray> I'll try Windows 8 and see how it goes
[07:48]<@jacky> how do you get it?
[07:48]<+camerongray> http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/download
[07:48]<@jacky> is there some sort of trial download?
[07:49]<+camerongray> Yeah, release preview
[07:49]<@jacky> how's that work? a time bomb in it?
[07:49]<@jacky> it dies on xx date?
[07:49]<+camerongray> yeah
[07:49]<@jacky> ok
[07:49]<+camerongray> You'll want to DL overnight though, 3.3gb
[07:49]<@jacky> camerongray: is it free to d/l?
[07:49]<+camerongray> Yep
[07:49]<@jacky> well be careful!! free software might not work, y'know
[07:49]<@jacky> <eg>
[07:49]<+camerongray> hahaha!
[07:50]<+camerongray> I'm downloading now, 30 mins remaining
[07:50]<@jacky> couldn't resist
[07:50]<+camerongray> 20mbit DSL
[07:50]<@jacky> so THAT is why you need that 1TB drive
[07:50]<@jacky> heh
[07:50]<lucifer> >.> camerongray
[07:50]<+camerongray> lol, 20mbit is slow here!
[07:50]<+camerongray> Can easily get 100mbit
[07:51]<@jacky> I've no idea here. I'd venture that you can get anything you want, if you can pay for it.
[07:51]<@jacky> :)
[07:51]<+camerongray> lol, probably cheaper than US broadband, Broadband and cell phones in the US cost a fortune
[07:51]<lucifer> I've got 1 Mbps and that's not guaranteed
[07:53]<lucifer> I really hate my Internet
[07:53]<@BC_Programming> well downloading Win8 now
[07:53]<+camerongray> Internet is very slow in the US unless you pay a fortune
[07:53]<@BC_Programming> had no idea which one to get... best I could decide on was the checked build
[07:53]<@jacky> BC_Programming: get the "FREE" one
[07:53]<@jacky> hehe
[07:53]<@BC_Programming> it's free for me
[07:53]<@BC_Programming> it will be on release too :D
[07:54]<+camerongray> My ISP provides 16mbit DSL with a 10gb cap for ?6.49/mo
[07:54]<@jacky> ah... the MVP card. nice play
[07:54]<+camerongray> lol
[07:54]<@jacky> 10gb cap? you can hit that in nothing flat
[07:54]<@jacky> how much for no cap?
[07:55]<@BC_Programming> 2.4GB will finish in 22 minutes... that's quick...
[07:56]<+camerongray> My ISP doesn't offer unlimited, another offers 20mbit unlimited for ?6.50/mo but they have customer service issues
[07:56]<@jacky> har... try dealing with Verizon here. "customer service issues" is a gross understatement
[07:56]<+camerongray> lol
[07:56]<+camerongray> I've had worse, Sky TV
[07:56]<@jacky> well... with people on the phone. when they send out a tech, he/she is usually very good
[07:56]<lucifer> I've got no cap here but Internet is expensive

[07:57]<+camerongray> You wait on hold for hours to "John" who is clearly Indian and not called "John"
[07:57]<+camerongray> He then goes through the script
[07:57]<+camerongray> A conversation usually goes like this:
[07:57]<@jacky> sounds familiar...
[07:57]<+camerongray> "My Set Top Box exploded"
[07:57]<+camerongray> "Try unplugging it and plugging back int"
[07:57]<@BC_Programming> "did you try resetting it"
[07:58]<+camerongray> "It exploded"
[07:58]<+camerongray> "Does it turn on"
[07:58]<+camerongray> "There was a bang and smoke came out"
[07:58]<@BC_Programming> and the west side of my house is now a fallout zone
[07:58]<+camerongray> "Try holding back-up and select for 30 seconds"
[07:58]<lucifer> camerongray my ISP is exactly the same way and they aren't Indian
[07:58]<+camerongray> I ended up sitting in the garden pretending to go through it with him
[07:59]<+camerongray> Finally came and replaced the thing
[07:59]<Tux2> lol
[07:59]<+camerongray> And I literally mean it when I say exploded!
[07:59]<@BC_Programming> heh when UKer's say "garden" I always think of a flower garden
[07:59]<+camerongray> lol
[07:59]<@jacky> I've figured them out. their goal is to settle the problem. that is defined as getting you off the phone. doesn't matter if what you need is fixed or not.
[07:59]<@BC_Programming> so that makes me think cam was sitting in the middle of a flower garden
[07:59]<+camerongray> lol
[08:00]<@jacky> what did he mean by garden then/
[08:00]<+camerongray> backyard
[08:00]<+camerongray> They are so unreliable, we have (seriously) gone through at least 15 set top boxes in a few years
[08:00]<@BC_Programming> SEE? Did you know they also drive on the wrong side of the road too. Only reason it doesn't cause accidents is because everybody does it
[08:01]<@BC_Programming> so then a smart person who drives on the correct side get's yelled at
[08:01]<+camerongray> They tend to subcontract out their installation, sometimes you get a really helpful guy who comes out to replace the box and ends up replacing the mount for the dish because it was getting old. - Free of charge
[08:01]<@BC_Programming> then you wake up
[08:01]<+camerongray> Or you get some who drill holes in the wall to feed cables and don't even clean up
[08:01]<+camerongray> lol
[08:02]<+camerongray> I think the best call was trying to explain that the dish was hanging off the wall
[08:03]<+camerongray> He went through the usual "No signal message" script
[08:03]<@jacky> I just want to know where to buy one of these exploding boxes.. I have a friend that I'd really like to sneak one into his house....
[08:03]<+camerongray> lol
[08:03]<+camerongray> Only one exploded
[08:04]<+camerongray> Freezing or only displaying a green picture is more common
[08:04]<@jacky> well.. I don't want that one. it is "used"
[08:04]<@jacky> heh
[08:04]<+camerongray> lol
[08:04]<@jacky> watch "The Hulk" much?
[08:04]<+camerongray> That's the other thing, they replace your box with a "Refurbished one"
[08:05]<+camerongray> But by "Refurbished" they mean they fixed it but didn't even clean it
[08:05]<lucifer> Lol
[08:05]<+camerongray> Usually the hard drives that go in them
[08:05]<@jacky> hard drive?
[08:06]<@jacky> what exactly does this "box" do?
[08:06]<+camerongray> Satellite receiver with PVR
[08:06]<@BC_Programming> aside from explode
[08:06]<+camerongray> Record, pause and rewind TV]
[08:06]<@jacky> what is PVR?
[08:06]<@jacky> BC_Programming: heeh right!
[08:06]<@BC_Programming> Personal Video Recorder iirc
[08:06]<@jacky> ok
[08:06]<+camerongray> Yeah
[08:06]<@BC_Programming> records to the hard drive
[08:06]<+camerongray> well, sometimes :P
[08:07]<@jacky> heck... it is designed to last - what?... a couple years? - then.
[08:07]<@BC_Programming> yes the explosion is an indication to the user that the warranty expired
[08:07]<+camerongray> lol
[08:07]<+camerongray> Couple of months!
[08:07]<@jacky> but I guess that is much better than an Impersonal Video Recorder. I want mine to be friendly.
[08:07]<@BC_Programming> heheh
[08:07]<@BC_Programming> I was thinking that
[08:08]<@jacky> ain't English wunnerfull ?
[08:08]<@BC_Programming> well I mean why it's called a "personal" video recorder, as opposed to, you know, a Video recorder
[08:08]<@jacky> it fits in your pants?
[08:08]<+camerongray> lol
[08:08]<@jacky> hehe
[08:09]<+camerongray> Our current box is faulty but they won't replace it as they class it as working
[08:09]<@BC_Programming> I'm not sure I'd feel safe with that close to my body
[08:09]<@BC_Programming> what with the exploding
[08:09]<@jacky> which is it? faulty or working?
[08:09]<+camerongray> It randomly drops sound and you need to stop and restart the recording
[08:09]<@jacky> BC_Programming: try it! you might like it.
[08:09]<+camerongray> And it keeps crashing and missing recordings
[08:09]<+camerongray> But it turns on so they class it as workign
[08:09]<@jacky> camerongray: push the "Explode now" button
[08:09]<@jacky> heh
[08:09]<+camerongray> lol
[08:09]<@BC_Programming> take it apart and send pieces back to them
[08:10]<@jacky> what else does this box do?
[08:10]<+camerongray> But we are welcome to pay ?400 for a replacement - Probably only costs ?50
[08:10]<+camerongray> Just a satellite receiver that lets you record, pause and rewind TV
[08:10]<+camerongray> Also has on demand movies
[08:10]<@jacky> so it is the receiver?
[08:10]<@BC_Programming> We've covered exploding... it also apparently records TV as a side feature
[08:11]<+camerongray> yeah
[08:11]<+camerongray> Connects between the dish outside and the TV
[08:11]<lucifer> I've seen my fair share of exploding stuff
[08:11]<@jacky> no cable, huh? just a biiiiig box?
[08:12]<@jacky> heh
[08:12]<@jacky> http://tinyurl.com/quaex <<< camerongray changed channels!!
[08:13] * @BC_Programming suffocated in a wall
[08:13]<+camerongray> hahaha
[08:13]<@jacky> http://tinyurl.com/a99s7h <<< if the come and replace your box, and the new one looks like this - BEWARE!
[08:13]<+camerongray> lol
[08:14]<+camerongray> usually very dirty and scratched
[08:14]<@BC_Programming> download is already at 92%
[08:14]<@BC_Programming> guess I'll have to install it
[08:14]<+camerongray> One had clearly come from a smoker, had to clean the orange fuzz out the fan
[08:14]<@jacky> BC_Programming: at 100%, does it ignite?
[08:14]<@BC_Programming> I hope not
[08:14]<@jacky> ooohh.... smoking orange fuzz! .... whoo... good times.
[08:14]<+camerongray> lol
[08:15]<@BC_Programming> my desktop still has that new computer smell
[08:15]<+camerongray> My main complaint is their "Like for like replacement" - According to them it means they can replace a 160gb box with an 80gb one
[08:16]<lucifer> Ouch
[08:16]<+camerongray> Same here, but it's fairly new
[08:16]<+camerongray> Well, parts of it
[08:16]<lucifer> My desktop doesn't smell new
[08:16]<+camerongray> lol
[08:17]<+camerongray> What I don't get is why Sky sell these boxes designed to record full HD video and only fit 160gb HDDs
[08:17]<+camerongray> Well, they are 320gb but half is reserved for the on-demand stuff
[08:17]<@jacky> we got the million dollar idea! Air Freshner named "New computer smell" !!
[08:17]<+camerongray> lol
[08:17]<lucifer> Lol
[08:17]<@BC_Programming> BRILLIANT
[08:18]<+camerongray> mmm - plastic and polystyrene!
[08:18]<@jacky> then we need "orange fuzz smell" so we can sell more "new computer smell"
[08:18]<@BC_Programming> and you could get "new car" air fresheners, and hang them on pine trees
[08:18]<+camerongray> lol - orange fuzz = ewww
[08:18]<@jacky> no, no, no. you put the smell in pine tress, and hang 'em in cars
[08:19]<@jacky> where do we put the new computer smell though?
[08:19]<@BC_Programming> old computers
[08:19]<@jacky> oh
[08:19]<@jacky> ok
[08:19]<lucifer> Heh
[08:19]<@BC_Programming> then we can call them refurbished
[08:19]<+camerongray> I still love the video on Youtube where a guy sticks a PC in a dishwasher to get the smoke smell out of it
[08:19]<@jacky> how about Re-Fur-Bushed instead?
[08:19]<+camerongray> lol
[08:19]<lucifer> Lol
[08:19]<@BC_Programming> or if you smash it
[08:19]<@BC_Programming> re-fur-bashed
[08:19]<+camerongray> heheh
[08:20]<+camerongray> Woo, download complete
[08:20]<@jacky> camerongray: seriously... with old radios, you can take a hose to one. Then let it thoroughly dry, and it is fine.
[08:20]<@BC_Programming> well Windos 8 is exciting
[08:20]<+camerongray> Time to burn it
[08:20]<@BC_Programming> my favourite part so far is the reboot loop
[08:20]<+camerongray> lol
[08:20]<@jacky> will it smell, when you burn it?
[08:20]<+camerongray> Yeah, as long as you can remove the batteries it's fine
[08:20]<@jacky> new product! "the smell of burning Windoze"
[08:20]<@BC_Programming> I think I have to have a special item to get past the boot wizard
[08:21]<+camerongray> Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahhSDEgkqQ8&feature=plcp
[08:21]<+camerongray> His other videos are interesting too, all old PCs
[08:21]<+camerongray> 486 or so
[08:22]<lucifer> I might download the win 8 rc
[08:22]<+camerongray> I'm burning it now
[08:23]<@jacky> does it smell much?
[08:23]<lucifer> Lol
[08:23]<@jacky> BC_Programming: you installed it already? stuck in a loop?
[08:24]<@BC_Programming> loops at boot
[08:24]<@BC_Programming> apparently they changed the BSOD
[08:24]<@BC_Programming> maybe it doesn't work on VMWare though
[08:24]<@jacky> what did you
[08:24]<@jacky> oh
[08:24]<@jacky> ok
[08:24]<@jacky> you installed it in its own "space" or whatever you call it... ?
[08:24]<@BC_Programming> guest OS
[08:25]<@jacky> going to try it "normal"?
[08:25]<@jacky> because... what's it do? install its own boot loader?
[08:25]<@BC_Programming> I won't install it Normal
[08:26]<@BC_Programming> I want to at least try it first :P
[08:26]<@jacky> is that what it does? install a boot loader? or does it eat your old windows 7?
[08:26]<@jacky> scary stuff....
[08:26]<@jacky> I was wondering how you go back..
[08:26]<@BC_Programming> there is likely an uninstall/revert thingy
[08:26]<lucifer> Jack I've got spare hard drives for 8
[08:27]<@jacky> the operative word is "likely" heheeh
[08:27]<@jacky> but we are safe here! We have an MVP to ask, when we need help.
[08:27]<@jacky> :)
[08:27]<@BC_Programming> :/
[08:27]<@jacky> lucifer: switch 'em in and out? that would do it.
[08:27]<lucifer> Yeah
[08:28]<@BC_Programming> I'm updating VMWare to version 8, see if that helps
[08:28]<@BC_Programming> hopefully it doesn't bork my other Guest Operating Systems but that would be no loss either really
[08:29]<@jacky> is Guest Operating System like a new word for "virus" ?
[08:29]<@BC_Programming> Guest Operating System within the Virtual Machine
[08:30]<@jacky> heh
[08:30]<+camerongray> bbl
[08:30]<@jacky> I'm just glad you didn't refer to it as GOS , and then I'd have to ask.
[08:30]<@jacky> camerongray: see you later
[08:32]<lucifer> I've got a 20 gb sata drive I can use for 8
[08:34]<@jacky>
[08:34]<@jacky> <@jacky> fill me in... how much does Win need now, and whatever distor of linux you'd use?
[08:34]<@jacky> <+camerongray> Not sure, 30gb for windows
[08:34]<@jacky> <+camerongray> Then take into account of Applications
[08:34]<@jacky>
[08:34]<@jacky>
[08:34]<@jacky> for what it is worth....

[17:40]<@BC_Programming> Hi Dino10... sorry for the delay :/
[17:41]<dino10> would it be easy to make a program that composes music on its own?
[17:41]<dino10> with several instruments
[17:41]<@BC_Programming> probably not
[17:41]<dino10> glaciem says it's super easy as if he's some kind of expert
[17:41]<@BC_Programming> well it would be easy if it was OK to make it sound like crap I guess
[17:41] * Guest40245 (Nepherius@FA81F413.5BE92F1D.8092D3DF.IP) has joined #glitchpc
[17:42]<dino10> So Glaciem is wrong? :)
[17:42]<@BC_Programming> There certainly are programs that do it though
[17:46]<@BC_Programming> http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/music_box/2010/05/ill_be_bach.html
[17:46]<@BC_Programming> Also this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algorithmic_composition
[17:47]<dino10> that would probably make very simple music
[17:47]<dino10> But
[17:47]<dino10> would it be easy?
[17:48]<@BC_Programming> well the first one guy apparently uses it for everything
[17:48]<@BC_Programming> but it's hardly a trivial program to write
[17:56]<dino10> :D
[17:59]<dino10> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hello_World!_%28composition%29
[17:59]<dino10> BC_Programming what do you think of this?
[18:01]<@BC_Programming> that doesn't say anything about the actual program itself
[18:01]<@BC_Programming> again, doubtful that it's trivial
[18:03]<dino10> Glaciem thinks that the music it made sucks ass and if he was them he would obviously make it MUCH better
[18:03]<dino10> which sounds stupid
[18:03]<@BC_Programming> doesn't sound like he knows how to program
[18:03]<@BC_Programming> which makes sense he must be spending a lot of time on the MC server to get such ridiculous McMMO stats
[18:03]<dino10> nope
[18:04]<dino10> he might've meant the actual music though
[18:04]<@BC_Programming> probably
[18:04]<@BC_Programming> well of course a person can make it better
[18:04]<@BC_Programming> (a person that knows how to work with music, anyway)
[18:04]<dino10> he's really smart though so I'd be surprised if he said something dumb like that
[18:10]<dino10> Actually
[18:10]<dino10> Now he's saying uhh
[18:10]<dino10> "I'm saying that that music program sucks to the extent it would be easy to make a superior program"
[18:11]<dino10> and he said if he knew how to program he could easily make a better one
[18:11]<@BC_Programming> that doesn't make a lot of sense, does it... that's like saying "if I knew how to build a house, I could totally make a better one than this" but the fact is that you <don't> know how to build a house so you have no idea how to build a better one and therefore haven't the first clue what is involved in it
[18:21] * Magiobiwan (MagiYoda@80F4299.4FBB256A.A5830F60.IP) Quit (Ping timeout)
[18:25]<dino10> So
[18:25]<dino10> How hard do you think it would be to make a program that can compose music?
[18:26]<@BC_Programming> <&BC_Programming> well it would be easy if it was OK to make it sound like crap I guess
[18:26]<dino10> and if you wanted it to sound good?
[18:27]<@BC_Programming> then it's hardly trivial
[18:27]<dino10> would you be able to do it?
[18:27]<@BC_Programming> No. Though I wouldn't bother
[18:28]<dino10> This should be enought to prove him he's wrong
[18:28]<dino10> and he stoopid
[18:28]<dino10> how long have you been programming?
[18:28]<@BC_Programming> people have written PhD papers on the topic for the last 20 or so years... phd's theses are usually not written on trivial topics!
[18:29]<@BC_Programming> re: your question: 9 years

[18:44]<@BC_Programming> think I said that when you first announced it but never hurts :P
[18:46]<dino10> Glaciem says I totally misrepresented what he actually said :(
[18:46]<dino10> no idea what the heck he's talking about then
[18:46]<@BC_Programming> Maybe you did, that's why I never said "Glaciem is wrong" because I don't know what he actually said, heh
[18:46]<dino10> What he says makes no sense to me now O_o
[18:56]<dino10> He does clearly say though that
[18:56]<dino10> A lot of programs out there are much better than the one he saw a video of
[18:56]<dino10> sound stupid?
[18:56]<dino10> Oh
[18:56]<@BC_Programming> what video?
[18:57]<dino10> the articel I linked to you
[18:57]<dino10> that said nothing about the program itself
[18:57]<dino10> the Hello World song
[18:57]<dino10> he saw an orchestra version of the song
[18:57]<dino10> and the song sucked
[18:57]<@BC_Programming> yeah.... I did notice it said nothing about the program
